KaiserNES: Ares Has Descended
September 7th, 1914. One mile South of Paris. It was unseasonably cold for a fall afternoon. I remember it all too clearly. The French Fifth Army had surrendered. What was left of the British Expeditionary Force had gone into full retreat. The Russian bear had stood down a year earlier. Worst of all, the rumors of the new German 'weapon' had been proven true. A God had walked upon the Earth.
My name is Lionel Delacroix. When I was younger, I enlisted in the Army to fight back the Kaiser in the Great War. Despite our losses, the words of our commanders steeled our hearts, and we awaited their assault at Verdun. Artillery pounded the dirt and took several of us, but we refused to back down from the inevitable assault.
The assault never came. Where we had expected millions, we only saw one, striding purposefully from the dense cloud of dirt stirred by the German guns. With not even a weapon to arm himself, he asked us to surrender. We laughed him off almost immediately. Taking another step forward, the man spoke again, in a cold, clear tone that still haunts my old bones.
"Zurücktreten oder den Tod erleiden. Stand down, or suffer death."
A young private, clearly unmoved by those words and all too eager to fight, strode towards the man, fixing his bayonet. With one fluid motion, he thrust the bayonet into his chest, loudly declaring "Ils ne passeront pas!" The spirit in his eyes melted and turned to horror as the blade shattered on his chest. Unharmed, the German extended his hands and clenched the man tightly around the throat.
I think it was that time that the Chauchats opened fire. We all opened fire. Our guns tore through the young man like paper, but didn't even leave a scratch on the German. Picking up the rifle left at his feet, he began the slow task of picking us off, one by one, only pausing to retrieve another weapon. I had fired nearly thirty times into the German's chest before my fear took hold and the bullet slipped from my fingers. I looked down to retrieve it, but it was obscured by the blood pooling at my feet. Without a second thought, I ran, only turning back once to see the rest of the Huns advancing behind the invincible German.
The rest, as the tired saying goes, was history. Thanks to Germany's new übermenschlich, the world changed. Germany became the only power in the old world worth a damn, and soon we elected the Action Française to try to get back at them. The German superhuman wasn't the first either. More of them began cropping up all over Europe, some even in America and the Far East. Challengers to the great German superhuman, Maurras called him. Others call them glorified weapons. Some zealots even called them Gods.
Sometimes I wonder if the zealots are right all along. Have the Gods descended on us? I still remember the old Greek tales of the grand deities who wielded the power to reward their followers and smite those who displeased them. Yes, perhaps these men are indeed Gods.
But have we sated the Gods...or have they come to strike us down?
Welcome all to my first NES, which I will be co-hosting with ArrowGamer. This will be an entirely story driven NES set after an alternate history WWI, where Germany used a superhero to win a decisive victory during the first World War, and the events leading up to the inevitable second conflict. As this is my first time, I'll be hosting this rough pre-thread, where we can discuss the world we're playing in as well as post ideas for the characters you will all be playing for. Unlike other Superhero NES, you are by no means obligated to play as a superhero, and there will also be factions in the game that you will be able to work with and possibly conspire alongside as well. Following the posting of the official thread, hopefully within a week or two, this will be where all the OOC chat and character sign-ups will go as well. Good luck, and have fun!
Do not post yet, please.
