Mike III has been trying to get some help and advice on how to play the Future Wars mod with a modern start. For a variety of reasons this has not gone smoothly so I thought I'd post a game for anyone interested to play.

Usual stuff: anyone can play, no flaming, put details of your game in spoiler tags, comments on other people's games in spoiler tags and of course Have Fun :D.

We're playing America Inc led by the wise and charismatic President Mike.

We're already very clever:

We don't start completely from scratch:

Here's the starting point:

Better not forget the save:

That's an interesting concept.

First, we have to change the civics for better ones:
Rep
Bureaucracy
Slavery or Caste System
Possibly Mercantilism
Either Pacifism or Free Religion

Now, let's join those three Seal thingies in one direction while the explorers will make contact for trading maps asap and for each turn with all the possible AI's.

Those three seals will attack one of the auxiliary cities of a AI and normally the chance is quite big to win the battle like the equivalent of 3 warriors vs 1 defensive warrior.
Even IMM can be a similar situation given how broken is an advanced start starting medieval times.

For a strategy, I would try to get a fast GEngineer (perhaps 50% GEngineer and 50% GMerchant) to found Mining Corporation (or if lost be prepared to capture it from the AI).

Next in line is possibly the Cereal Mills.

If going for some sort of domination, perhaps going for Refrigeration to get that juicy 20% from the UB and that corp.

EDIT: Pacifism will work in 5 turns because on T5, all religions are randomly distributed to all players and given there are less than 7 players in all, everyone will get its religion.
Don't care about the diplo because on advanced starts, given the high cost of settlers, it is simply war war and WAR.

We need to find oil so we can build tanks. Then the two next cities need to connect those two resources.

Civics wise I'm thinking: Police State, Vassalage, Slavery, State Property and Paganism for 1 turn revolution followed by chopping/whipping an army asap.

True, I was more thinking in terms of what I'm used to: Renaissance starts and Industrial ones.

Serfdom certainly makes sense. Police State, true it is enabled. State Property...I'm not sure for the very first stages. Getting a free specialist at the very beginning is strong and once the empire gets big, then switch to SP.

And people shouldn't be in a ultra hurry because you will feel the extreme sluggish evoluation of the AI's. Empire-wise and technologically-wise too.

Shame it is not emperor level, but Mike is used to Prince.

I'm thinking of SP more in terms of +10% production and +1F/workshops in combination with PS for early unit spam.

i dont want a modern start! the anchient era is where i start! but close enough...

hey guys: I got through the inflation. rex i found out does pay off. now, my most important question: what is the ideal future era army, in what quantity?

I'm torn between reporting your post and replying to you directly. Many people have tried, time and time again, to help you and this is how you show your appreciation? Folks around here are saints; I'd have given up long ago if I hadn't steered clear in the first place. I should still have kept out.

For the record, when you ask a question and don't provide the information people need to assist you - which happens pretty much every time you post and aren't complaining about/attacking someone - those questions you're asked in return are not off-topic. Take a look around at how others here ask for help; they give a lot and get a lot in return. A very good recent example to follow would be Revent. You appear to be asking much and giving nothing.

i said close enough dude. did you even read it fully?

and for the record, i never said what there doing is bad. i would actually try it if safari could download the link, and my computer could make pictures and put them here. but there is no f13 button.

And I wonder why this troll does not get banned.

Let's not get off topic. We are here to help someone.

Police with slavery to start rexing asap. Take as much land. I don't think you need to worry about military. Unlikely AI will attack that early plus its on noble.
Serfdom will help out greatly. Main Goal: Take as much land as possible while keeping economy balance.

Anyone agree?

i said close enough dude. did you even read it fully?

Yes I have read your often single-line/sentence posts fully. Like I said you often don't provide nearly enough information for others to be able to help.

"Close enough" does not equal "Thank you for the time/effort/assistance". Your own threads have largely (if not totally) replaced thanks with an abrupt and defensive attitude.

Aha, so you're playing on a Mac? I don't think you've mentioned that before but that would've helped people help you. Try some of these pointers and see if anything allows you to take screenshots within Civ. As for not being able to upload/download saves to/from the forum, I don't know; sorry.

Pigswill: apologies for dragging your thread off-topic - and yes, I see some amount of irony. I'm done here, will take my nose back out of things.

I can see the sense in police state / SP for the bulk of the game. Not sure until we know the lie of the land, though. There's obviously a choice here between production-bonus civics (PS/SP) and science-bonus ones (Merc/Rep), which I'd say depends on where we are and when's the best time to start attacking. If this is an isolated start, for instance, then Rep might make sense for a while to build up a bit of a tech lead. Mercantilism likewise - until there's widespread contact with other civs then you get the free specialist without losing out in terms of trade routes. But I've never tried a modern era start and I'm also prone to being too cautious / too slow to begin attacking. So this could be absolute rubbish.

@ Mike - there's a whole forum here devoted to running Civ on a Mac; folks there could v probably help. See here for instance on how to create screenshots.

How to take a screen shot on a Mac:

Spoiler :
Hold command + shift and press 3.

The picture is saved to the desktop, where it can be uploaded to imageshack.

I played until that point, but I forgot to install my additional fan and the computer overheated.

Basically, I went Police State, Bureaucracy, Serfdom and SP. I did not commit the religious civic yet because the anarchy went from 1 turn to 2 turns for a single additional civic. Then I prefer to wait a bit for another mass change of civic and if I had committed anything else than Free Religion, I don't know what kind of AI's I would have met and they will automatically refuse OB and map trading if a zealot is met.

My seals, with the help of workers, went for the nearest neighbour, captured the capital for the cost of a single Seal (16% odd) and the Marine went down to 1 :strength: lol.

The next city fell with luck of 28%. So basically, I almost destroyed a civ with the initial military I had.

I was trying to get the circumnavigation bonus first with a galleon.

generally in late game starts it is better to chop/whip best units for the era you start in and go conquer some neighbors because

1) settler cost is adjusted for the free infrastructure you get making unit hammers relatively cheaper
2) AI's don't chop/whip as you do and lose starting bonuses (free workers, scouts etc) on highest levels
3) they are not focused enough for defense, they can build silly things and some basic defense things they usually can abuse to stop you don't work that well (walls, castles etc aren't build as an example)
4) they of course don't have enough cultural defense.

Since you already should have currency and maybe state property you can take unlimited number of cities until you finish the game.

Played up to 1970.

Spoiler :
Adopted PS, Vass, Slavery,SP on T1. Chopped out a bunch of workers to start with, then garrison infantry, seals artillery, even one airship has been ridiculously useful when AI start with marinesFounded 3rd city on oil (pretty late, I've only just got oil online in 1970).Went to war with Isabella early on using 3 starting seals (nice trick Tachywaxon), captured her last city in 1969. Up to 6 cities ow. Building/chopping Kremlin in capital, due in 3 turns, I hope its not too late. Mansa discovered me in 1970, we swopped maps and OB and I've just rebased my airship to Mali.

Its been a lot more fun than I anticipated though very different from ancient start and I'm still adjusting.
