Mano v Mano

I'm not totally happy with this set. I'm not sure if it is because of my situation or because of where I think I am v your game. I am miles away from CS and I think that is pressing on my brain. My early wonders are also pushing my academy out too.

I build a settler and a worker, stuck them on a galley and sent them on a 1 turn trip to the gold island. They still haven't made it. I got a lucky religion spread and I will be spreading that around to my cities to raise my happy cap. Unfortunately, it is one of the AIs second religions and will cause tension with my trading partners.

Hi,

I played my save today. I tech traded quite a bit (especially on T80) this turn set and got: Animal Husbandry, Bronze Worker, Archery, Iron Working, Polytheism, Sailing and Math in trades. I self-researched Literature and Metal Casting and I just recently started Machinery. I settled a city on the island just north of us by the fish and have another settler 1 turn away from settling a city near the gold. I built the Great Library and popped another GS, which I settled in Athens. I also met Kublai Khan, so there should only be one more civ on the map that I don't know yet.

I think the value of the Great Lighthouse will show up as you settle more cities. Washington built it in my game and when he did, his GNP shot through the roof!!

How do you generate your nifty log file? I'll do that in the future since it's easier than doing it manually.

Here we go:

Science
Ruff: 3,828 beakers
Mitch: 5,683 beakers

Production
Ruff: 1,544 hammers
Mitch: 1,548 hammers (whipping + bureacracy + 100% bonus hammers on G. Lib)

GNP
Ruff: 35
Mitch: 39

Beakers/turn @ 100%
Ruff: 42
Mitch: 87

Production
Ruff: 18
Mitch: 25

I think Bureaucracy gives a huge surge in production and science early in the game. This advantage will go away as soon as you learn Civil Service. The Great Lighthouse will only get more powerful as you build more cities. The question is: will the Great Lighthouse allow you to catch up to my early Bureaucracy?

I noticed that you have a settler and a worker getting ready to plop down by the gold. What happens if there is a barb on that island? You'll lose your city. I thought about sending a worker but decided to send an archer on the first trip instead. I'll have to send a worker on the next slow boat...

What are your thoughts on this game? Do you want to continue for another turn set to see where we are? Or should we re-roll on a map type without so many small islands?

gees - I'm falling further behind in tech. This is a great game - really struggling against these AIs (and you). Lets keep going.

Re unprotected gold city - yeah - risky. Trying to find time to build some protection - too busy with wonders :D.

Re log - it is part of the HOF mod - check out the HOF options.

My game is slowly getting better - but I've found out why I behind all of the AIs ... bloody mansa and Washington are tech trading a storm. I am a few turns from CS (finally) and hopefully I can trade with them to catch up a bunch of techs.

OK. Let's play another 20 turns. I'm definitely interested to see if/when the GLH begins to catch up (and it will as you build more cities and learn Civil Service yourself).

I've turned on the autolog feature, but I'm not sure how to view it in color. I only see it when I open up my log in note pad or something like that. Do you copy it from within the game itself?

How is Cyrus going in your game? In mine he sucks the big one ... probably because of his navel aspirations.

That's too funny!! Cyrus is very weak in my game too, but I haven't seen his navy yet. That could prove to be complicated if you attack him and he sends his floatilla to your homeland and starts pillaging your nets and sinking your galleys...

CS helped ... as did multiple trade missions. I now have 1500g and I'm totally happy to run 100% tech without having to worry too much about courthouses.

Hmmm... I just played until turn 120 (125 AD). I missed your post saying that you had already played to turn 120. Let me post my save for turn 120 tonight (or tomorrow) and play to turn 140 so that I can catch up.

It looks like you have turned things around, but I'll know better how we compare once I get to turn 140 as well. I'll post more soon.

Edit: I just noticed that my post #27 came in at about the same time your post #26 did.

In my save, I focused on exploration. I also am researching toward Optics and will have it in about 6 turns. No wonders this turn set and not much whipping / chopping.

Here are the comparisons:

Total Research
Ruff: 6805 beakers (includes 862 gold)
Mitch: 8668 beakers

Production
Ruff: 2737 hammers
Mitch: 2266 hammers

Research at 100%
Ruff: 118 beakers
Mitch: 112 beakers

GNP
Ruff: 59
Mitch: 48

MFG
Ruff: 21
Mitch: 31

It looks like your Great Lighthouse is starting to kick in now. Having Currency added yet another trade route (I don't know Currency yet). Once you revolt to Bureaucracy, you should really start catching up to me in the total research category. The question is, how quickly... ;)

You also produced a lot more hammers this turn. Building 2 wonders (Great Library and National Epic) with 100% bonus hammers with access to marble helped. You must have also chopped/whiped more efficiently than me as well. Finally, your third city is more developed than mine, so it's producing a lot more hammers than my third city.

Regarding the unprotected gold city, are you living on the edge? Or can barbs not spawn on such a small island? I lost a lot of turns sending an archer with my settler rather than a worker. I only recently got my gold mine built... :(

I'll play the next 20 turns to catch up to you. It will be interesting to see how much you've closed the gap. I'll try to post my save tomorrow when I'm done.

I played to 600 AD. After getting Optics (and circumnavigating the globe), I beelined toward Liberalism. I will easily win the race and may choose to hold off on learning it to try to set myself up to get a better tech. We'll see...

I still don't know how you posted the turn log. Where did you copy it from? I have autolog enabled, but my autolog is just a .txt file.

I'll compare our 600 AD saves today.

I just post my text file. In the HOF options there are options to color code it for forum use. Check those and it will auto insert the required formatting codes.

I'll try that.

Here are the comparisons:

Total Research
Ruff: 14,470 beakers (includes 1497gold)
Mitch: 16,683 beakers (includes 142 gold)

Production
Ruff: 3688 hammers
Mitch: 3478 hammers

Research at 100%
Ruff: 185 beakers
Mitch: 160 beakers

GNP
Ruff: 70
Mitch: 59

MFG
Ruff: 42
Mitch: 36

You're definitely gaining on me in science. Plus, you have a lot of opportunities for tech trades that I don't have. I wouldn't be surprised if you pull in the tech lead this turn set. But I'll do my best to hold you off... :)

Are you ready for another 20 turns?

I am starting to get very frustrated about not having any iron. I would love to build a ship load of knights and put Cyrus out of his misery ... but that needs iron - which he has.

WTF? Cyrus is the weakest guy in the game. What the hell is he thinking? I plan to attack him in my game soon, but I've been too focused on other builds to really get my war effort underway.

Popping Iron in your capital? I was hoping that wouldn't happen (i.e. popping gems, metals or silver) in either of our games since it really can give one player an added boost. Hopefully it happens in my game too to even things out... ;)

I decided to take Astronomy with Liberalism rather than waiting to try to get something better.

I'll take a look at your save and do my normal comparison today if I get my work done...

It looks like you're getting a bit ahead. Rather than do the comparison, I'll play the next 20 turns if I get a chance.

I took astonomy too and (I think) I traded it to Washington to invalidate his colossus (his water tiles were 4c). He has basically stopped teching in my game. Mansu (as per usual) is picking up 2 techs every 5 turns - guys a monster.
