I seem to do fine with most aspects of the game but no matter what I've tried my cities are always overpopulated!

What can I build/produce that will reduce my cities overpopulation?

Am I producing too much of something?

Thanks for reading:goodjob:

go in to city management and select tiles that produce hammers or coins. You can also set the governor to pick these for you by telling them to focus on commerce or prodution.
Coins(commerce) will help with research and gold
hammers(production) will help you build units and woners and buildings in that city
bread(food) will help the city grow, this is also used for building the workers and settlers
Build workers ore settlers, these halt city growth while they are being built
Try turning some excess population intospecialists, they won't work on tiles but will provide other benefits to your empire.

You can build city improvements and research techs that let you turn more population or turn population into specific kinds of specialists

To reduce overpopulation, turn some of your food-producing population into specialists - this way you reap rewards without overpopulating - Sulla's preview does a good job explaining it.

I thought there was a way to tell the governor to keep as many people happy as unhappy? (per something I saw in Sulla's walkthrough) Would this help, if I'm remembering correctly?

You can also re-sculpt your outlying tiles to have stuff like villages as opposed to farms. Mo money is mo better (once you have enough food).

You could pop rush some stuff to keep your population down.

Just starve them. Gosh.

I coulda swore there was a button or some sort to halt growth in a city, check the city screen.

Where is Sulla's preview? Or are you referring to his Civ 4 Walkthrough?

Once I started on a city with 9 floodplains. It sounds cool, but it's NOT!!! My city expanded way too fast, and I had no production to build the improvements it needed! Good thing I got monarchy so I could make people happy through garrisons.

*Definitely* make specialists. It's something you need to do to keep them from being overpopulated. Also, in the shorter term, you could pump out a few workers or settlers to keep it from growing.

..or just push the "stop pop growth" button in the lower left corner. it works but it takes a hellevah long time to research and build stuff - is what i found.

Floodplains are awesome! You can support a lot of specialists and build towns on almost every square!

This quickly results in a big source of money/tech and great people

Do flood plains still give you -0.4 health? And is it for every flood plains in your city radius? If it's within your city radius, does it depend on whether your culture has expanded to include it, or if it is being worked?
