By a congressional investigation, which found that ACORN has not broken any laws in the last five years.

The controversial community organizing group Acorn has not broken any laws in the last five years, according to a Congrssional Research Service report released Tuesday evening.

The report, requested by Representative John Conyers, Democrat of Michigan, said that federal agencies, mainly the Departments of Justice and Housing and Urban Development, have awarded money to the group 48 times since 2005. But, in none of those instances did Acorn violate the terms of their funding, the report said.

Since the 2008 elections, the group, which works primarily to expand voter registration and affordable housing, has become a key Republican target. A series of scandals brought to light by conservative activists led to multiple Congressional hearings and repeated attempts to deny it taxpayer funding.

Acorn has been the subject of scores of investigations—a total of 46 inquiries by federal, state, and local agencies, including the FBI and the Treasury Department, and five by Congress as of October 2009, according to the report.

The report found no evidence that voters attempting to cast ballots at the polls had been improperly registered by Acorn, a chief Republican accusation.

The report also said that a sting-style effort to publicize the group’s allegedly illegal activities, may have broken state laws. Two conservative activists set off a firestorm in September when they posed as a pimp and a prostitute seeking financial advice and secretly videotaped Acorn employees offering advice on how the couple could hide their illicit activities and avoid paying taxes.

Also on Tuesday, a federal court in Brooklyn, New York, rejected the administration’s request to reconsider its ruling that a House resolution barring the group from receiving federal funding was unconstitutional. Earlier this month a judge ruled that the law constituted a “bill of attainder,” legislation intended to punish specific people or groups.

In November the Justice Department also concluded that the Obama administration can legally pay the group

"The largest corruption crisis in the history of America...It's thousands of times bigger than Watergate because Watergate was only a little break-in by a couple of guys."
-- Rep. Steven King on ACORN

I bet the vast majority of the 52% of Republicans, who actually believe that ACORN was responsible for Obama winning the election, don't change their minds one bit over this latest victory of justice and fairness over propaganda and lies.

What do you want to bet they don't get prosecuted for their own apparent crimes? After all, law and order is a one-way street to so many.

Yeah, your title doesn't match the article. Nice try.

ACORN cleared of wrongdoing ... By a congressional investigation

How doesnt this match the title?

The controversial community organizing group Acorn has not broken any laws in the last five years, according to a Congrssional Research Service report released Tuesday evening.

We all knew this. The whole thing was a set up by a guy who wrote for the Centurion while he was in college an extreme right-wing newspaper.

How doesnt this match the title?

You stated ALL wrongdoing, when in reality all the article attests to is that whatever wrongdoing may have occured does not prohibit in and of itself the disallowing of funding.

Note your article makes no reference to the actions of the ACORN employees in the video stings one way of the other.

You stated ALL wrongdoing

I said wrongdoing, not all.

I think that pretty much clears any wrongdoing. So I don't really understand your objection.

As for specific individuals. I don't care for them. The review says that the organization ACORN has apparently not broken any laws for the past 5 years.

Is the name-calling in the title really necessary?

Is the name-calling in the title really necessary?
To be honest, it shouldn't be even included in the title. But I guess the OP wanted to rub it into the smug liberal faces.

but I thought liberals were devil worshiping comunazis that didn't celebrate Christmas?

Clearly ACORN is still evil. I have no proof, and my claims of illegality have had nil result. But they are evil, I tells you.

I think the most crushing concern, from the perspective of a democratic society, is that 52% of Republicans were of the opinion that ACORN helped steal an election. This is very scary. We know that there were right-wing pundits that attempt to smear ACORN as part of a system of swaying people's political opinion: unfortunately, the smearing was so effective that the average Republican voter was heavily misinformed on this topic.

The voter had become misinformed after watching the news, instead of being ignorant before watching the news. That's no way for a society to advance.

edit: regarding the 'stings'. I'm a big fan of stings. I recognise that people need to be sent through the criminal justice system after collecting information in a criminal manner, but I still think they can be heros. If activists are heroes in Iran, they can be heroes here.

Surely subverting due legal process is different in Iran than in America, though. Activists protesting in Iran are a bit different from people disregarding laws to uncover crimes in America.

Will I recognise that there are differences at the details, we're in a much more free & open society after all, there have been many times where people's whistleblowing was an essential part of showing the evil of people.

We have a lot of evil hidden within the power structures of our society. And we have a lot of people who're willing to use the law to subvert the law.

You think that's scary? There's still people out there from 9 years ago that Bush stole the election... and from 5 years ago... and from any time the GOP wins an election somewhere.

The difference is that the 2000 election was actually fraudulently decided by the activist partisan decision by SCOTUS.
