Naval support bonus when attacking?

What’s the deal with naval support? Sometimes when I attack with ground forces the naval support bonus is not applied. Must my navy be immediately adjacent to the square I’m attacking or will a diagonal square suffice? [I understand that the Galley provides no support]

Very annoying counting on the naval support and it doesn’t turn up. Feels like Gallipoli.

I believe if it is diagonal it will also apply, as long as the ship is adjacent to the square where the battle is taking place. I will, however, have to test this tonight.

I’ve had diagonal ‘support’ that didn’t count. This has happened on more than one occasion and I’m trying to figure out why it isn’t being applied. Big bummer relying on a Battleship Fleet that doesn’t show up.
