new civilization: Australia

I just read over a few more posts in this thread and I'm going to make some more comments.
Mounted infantry are a decent choice except for the fact that at the time they were most famous (and mounted) they were not Australian's but part of the British empire.

Also ... the Australian 'civilization' was technically a part of the British empire until the treaty of Westminster and later the fall of Singapore when we passed laws establishing our own independent foreign policy. So I say scratch any leaders before Curtin (who would also be an excellent choice to replace Barton).

Back to the UU, Australia built their own ships, fighter aircraft and even designed the worlds first 'tank' but never created significant enough units of them to be defined by them in battle. It was always our infantry that gained good reputations as often we didn't have the resources to equip our men as extravagantly as other nations (like the USSR, USA or UK) but still had a fair amount of fit, country men ready for service.

In WW1 our troops performed better then many in the trenchs, in WW2 we did an amazing job against the Japanese in Indonesia (but a pathetic job in Singapore). In Vietnam we were considered the only soldiers who could fight on the same terms as the Viet Cong and win. Our troops have proven great at fighting unconventionally and in thick cover, a must for any country that can't lay down some serious fire support (like the nations I mentioned before).

Going with the concept I mentioned before that Australia's independent foreign policy didn't evolve until 1941 ... its probably important to choose a unit that is relevant then. I'd suggest a modified Infantry or Marine unit that wasn't so 'wacky' as 'SEALS'. Something more along the lines of a unit that can operate well from tough terrain, even offensively and isn't so great at a conventional head on war.

UU should be Anzac or Lighthorse. Why a generic term like mounted infantry? Thats like calling Legionaire - armoured swordsman.
Leaders should be Monash and Bradman. PMs are all basically scumbags. If you have Menzies maybe his special power is being able to trade key resources to the enemy? (Howard's is to finance the enemy). Monash is the best general, and Bradman is the best cricket captain. (no - steve waugh is NOT!)
Game desperately needs a new building added - the MCG. Much better than a coliseum!

All I can say is:

Hell yes.

This looks like a beauty of a mod.

Monash, I can tell why, but Don Bradman? Yeah, he's was the best cricketer in the world, but what else has he done for Australia?

Perhaps the MCG could build a colloseum in every city on the continent and add +2 happy and +8 culture to the city it is build in?

However to be fair, there are bigger stadiums in the world so I'd say that there are better options for national icons. Sydney Opera House is a potent contender. +3 happy and +50% culture could be a good bonus for a building like that.

I have a query, I'm new to this but please let me know, I downloaded the Oz patch but how do I go from it being a file on my desktop to being able to use it?
secondly as an ex member of the 1st /15th Royal New South Wales Lancers I think that the use of the light horse is the best choice for the UU. I do agree with all other posts that the SAS are at the pinacle of the modern worlds assault infantry but I don't see how you could translate that to gameplay. Maybe an infantry with a bonus while in forrest and a bonus while in Desert.

But I see this as useless, I'm not sure how everyone elses game pans out, but for me whenever I have the tech to be prodcing infantry there is precious little jungle left. for a similar reason I rarely use the civic environmentlism.
Perhaps a good use for the SAS would be an ultra fast moving motorcyle infantry unit or even an infantry that ignored 50% of an enemy cities defensive bonus. But for what it's worth, I still stand by the lighthorse, the lighthorse were the last cavalry charge ever, and this will probably ring true throughout the history of the modern world.

My father and Grandfather used to tell me how they went into the city of Adelaide at night just so they could listen to him play on the radio. Back in those days radios were expensive and radio stores in the city left them on over night.
The cricket games from England started at about 7pm and there used to be about 50 people huddled around the store in the cold.

From what my Grandfather said, Bradman had a profound effect on the Australian sense of pride, something which can never be measured by scientific methods.

Hey, that's awesome stuff. I hope updates will improve it better. Great job.

This is a great civ, my only complaint is the UU should be changed to something more aussie - or at least the name should

     How do you play australia as a civ? It is not showing up on mine.
Please help!!!:(

If you are looking for additional leaders I have some suggestions for for you:
a. Lachlan Macquarie – Governor of New South Wales pre-federation and referred to as the Father of Modern Australia for his visionary work in expanding the settlement. I suggest traits of Expansive and Organised.
b. Gough Whitlam – A famous (infamous?) Labour/Socialist Prime Minister whose primary source of fame is as the only Prime Minister to be dismissed from Government by the Governor General. He was Prime Minister during the early 1970’s and oversaw some significant changes in Australian social policy. I suggest traits of Creative and Philosophical.
c. Bob Hawke – A notable Labour Prime Minister who started the early attempts at reforming the Australian economy. He was a bit of a rogue and a man of the people. I defer to Charcoal’s decision on his traits: Industrious and Organised.
d. John Howard – Our current Prime Minister and the second longest serving Prime Minister of our federated history. Again I defer to Charcoal’s decision on traits: Financial and Organised.

It really won’t matter who you put as a leader as the country is split down the middle politically. The first one (Macquarie) is neutral to most people. The last three will cause civil war regardless of who you pick so it might be best to pick one from either side of politics. :D

Please don't consider Paul Keating. I remember my father almost breaking down because we were close to loosing the house because of the "Recession we had to have" and the outrageously high interest rates.

good suggestions... i would add John Curtin, Australia's WW2 leader as another alternative. Perhaps Industrious and Philosophical or Aggressive?

IMO, without doubt the two sides of Australian politics are best represented by Menzies and Whitlam, each is a legendary figure for their respective supporters. Barton is kind of generic. hehe

yay. great mod. i second (third?) the request for a change to the name of the UU to 'Light Horse'. Yes the UU could be something else like ANZAC infantry unit but that would be work; a name change would be enough to make it more recognisably australian to most aussies.

edit: The flag only shows up white for me too. :( how sad. is there a common problem that would cause this? can anyone tell me how to fix it?

Sorry to bump this, but it looks sweet. I don't know how you make those 3D leader animations, but they are awesome. I've seen your other Civs and they look great too.

I'm illiterate and map-building/modding but I want to add this Civ to this world map: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=134245 Australia's content is empty right now. If someone could tell me how or do it and upload, that'd be great. ;)

Good job. As an Australian I don't have to play as England anymore when I feel the need for patriotism.

Include the Aberigonis as a type of barbarian civ or something like that for an Australia map.

The who? Oh you mean the Aboriginies. Yes there have been plenty of suggestions for that one. It gets about 50/50 support.
