[BTS] News: BOTM 199 - Roosevelt, Monarch - Starts 1 Sept

It appears that random events are enabled. Those are normally turned off for BOTMs...

More often than not, random events are switched off, but sometimes we leave them on. This follows feedback we've had in the past that quite a few players don't like random events, but a some players like them. Personally, I tend to always switch random events off if it's a difficult (immortal or deity) game - because that's when they can be irrecoverably game-breaking - but I'm more likely to leave them on in easier games.

Cool, thanks for testing. Did you check if the GSpy from Communism is still generated? Maybe nothing there?

Sidepoint: It's kinda funny to have an American no-spy game given the world-wide mass surveillance systems they have in place in our real world. Ironic twist perhaps :p

I didn't explicitly check that. But realistically, I'd be astonished if you did get a great spy from Communism.

There was a certain intended irony in my comments about America and Trump in the game announcement.

Doubt we get one either. His only use would be to start a golden age, as he surely wouldn't be able to infiltrate. Would kinda be like a spread culture mission in that case I guess.

........ or Scotland Yard for +100% culture??? (would multiplier buildings like Jail and Intell agency, or the other one, work like that?)

Didn't check Scotland Yard, but I checked the intelligence agency (which would normally give +8 AND +50% espionage points. What I found is that it does indeed give +50% culture, but ONLY from that culture that is derived from espionage (which does actually seem reasonable).

For example, a city with only the intelligence agency and no other culture gives you 12 culture/turn. Adding a theatre (+3) produces total 15 culture/turn, so no 50% bonus for the theatre. But then working a spy specialist (+4 espionage) actually adds +6 culture, for a total of 21 - so the spy does get the bonus.

100,000 culture:eek: That seems a steep overcompensation by the devs imo. I would not even build EP buildings in a culture game nor, with the exception of CoL of course, even research techs with EP buildings.

How could one even build Scotland Yard if one cannot produce a Gspy?

Anyway, thanks for the several explanations of no Esp mechanics. From hindsight making sense, while one could easily have other expectations.

And indeed, +50.000 more culture because of 40-50 or so spy-culture (which requires a LOT more teching) one can get on top of say 800 regular culture per turn, that's ridiculous. +10.000 would be just fine.

To extrapolate this, cathedrals and such should not multiply spy-culture I would expect

If any building that normally produces EP raises the cultural output, I am still interested in a cultural attempt. Of course, 100 K points is huge, but there are much more options, techs like democracy become interesting, we are less dependent on religious spreads, also we are IND. As a genuine fan of cultural victories, I see a sweet challenge here :mischief:. Plus, on monarch, I have my doubts if any AI can win before I get three 100K-cities.

No, not democracy (security bureau is not really helpful), but communism for the intelligence agency. I always confuse those two. Castles are also interesting (+1:culture: , +25%:espionage:, +1 TR), but once again, I am wondering if they lose all of their bonuses with Economics or just the defense.

I'm pretty certain it is the opposite. They will still provide defence after Economics and also culture. But you loose the multiplier and trade route.

Hiya, a suggestion would be turning off events for the challenger deity save (in future games).
If not too much work. But just my opinion, for the hard version they can be very annoying.

Gotta followup an anti-event post with a pro-event one :D
Events are fun and provide excitement. They're meant to be part of the game.
And this is a casual competition.
It's a challenge to adapt to them, and a strategy decision to keep gold in the bank to pay for bad ones. You can even research certain techs to try to trigger the event. If you get GunPowder 50 turns before everyone, you're the only player that can get "Guns/Butter" event, etc, etc.
I would suggest the exact opposite, and enable events in the challenger save more often--especially since they're off 95% of the time.

I abhor events and do not find them fun.

I think events can be fun (goody huts to) but they make comparing games a bit more difficult. If one person gets a really good event or two and another person gets only bad events, the end results could be affected.

In my opinion, it's fine to include events (and even huts) from time to time to mix things up every once in a while; just don't include them more than occasionally.
