I’m not sure what you guys are going to think about this round, because where combat is concerned, not a damn thing happened.
I have a new-found respect for Sisiutil. Posting a game like this is actually a LOT of work!
I started the round by running more scientist specialists, boosting my science slider and changing my tech path directly to Priesthood. Whereas my original thought was to research Sailing and hook up my Iron to Rome ASAP, I didn’t see much point since I knew I’d be pausing my military buildup for the Oracle anyway.
NOTE TO SELF: If you’re not going to build Monasteries, don’t research Meditation. Meditation means Philosophy is bulbed. Polytheism results in Aesthetics, which both lead directly to Literature.
In true Roman fashion, I issued orders for my army of Workers to build roads all over the place. By the time I finish the Oracle, I won’t need Sailing.
My Chariots went out to knock off some Barbarian cities and do some scouting, though they really did very little of either. I sacrificed 3 of them knocking off two different cities, and another city was taken by Alexander.
In Rome, I used this “lull” to change the build to a Settler. Settling Deer/Fur/Silver right outside Rome’s doorsteps was a much cheaper way to boost happiness. I also decided to settle my GG in Rome. At least for now, I think it’s more important to start with lvl 3 Praets out the gate.
Also, being at war, I see Metal Casting soon, which is another 2
after Cows/Horses/Gold north of Rome.
In Tenochtitlan, I put the Library and all that seafood to work by running two scientist specialists. You’ll see why this is important in a few turns.
My next order of business was to raze the barbarian city and found that Deer/Fur/Silver city, which only cost me a mere 3
maintenance. I’ll eventually get around to resettling the barb city NW of the Cows for a Cow/Gold/Horse city ... not much growth, but plenty of Grassland for Cottaging.
Now how ‘bout that, eh? My population’s already at Domination level, so all I need now is to expand. However, I’m thinking about switching gears towards Conquest instead – just wiping the floor of everybody. Period.
So here’s my plight. In 13 turns, I’ll have a Great Scientist in Tenochtitlan, which I’ll use to bulb Mathematics. The turn after that, the Oracle will be completed, and I’ll choose Construction ... hopefully ... it’s pretty late in the game for the Oracle, so who knows.
But all was well ...
... except for the part where I chose Currency instead. Aside from the extra trade routes, Saladin had already approached me for a tech trade, so I knew I could get Alphabet from him at some point. Plus, I wanted my UU, the Forum, in Tenochtitlan and Moscow sooner than later so I could keep lightbulbing my way forward.
Organized + Mathematics + Chopping = VERY fast Courthouses. BTW, Confucianism was founded in Tenochtitlan.
In 410 BC, Saladin built the Pyramids and switched to Representation. If I’m not careful, this Protective monster is going to get away from me.
So that’s where I ended it. My economy isn’t the greatest, but it’s far from the shambles it was in a millennium ago.
Saladin demanded I stop trading with the Greeks, and I gave in since I was already planning to work over Alexander next.
Shaka has a power rating 10% greater than mine, but in GNP, Production and Crop Yield, I’m leaps and bounds ahead of everybody.
Saladin will trade me Alphabet, but it’s going to cost either Currency or Construction – neither of which I want to give my biggest rival.
Shaka will at least entertain the notion of being bribed into war, but it’s going to cost techs.
I can still convert to Hinduism, so I might be able to soften up everybody a little to my upcoming wars.
What to do ... what to do ...
I think in roughly this order:
- Put all espionage points towards Saladin.
- Tech Civil Service -> Metal Casting -> Machinery -> Engineering.
- Prepare to found Cows/Horses/Gold before Shaka can.
- Keep an eye on Saladin to research Aesthetics & build the Statue of Zeus before he does.
- Adopt Hinduism (I was hoping somebody would’ve asked by now).
- Research Alphabet manually (9 turns).
- Bribe Shaka with techs to attack Saladin.
- Settle the next GS in Tenochtitlan (I don’t need Pacifism).
- Destroy Alexander.
- Destroy Saladin (hopefully, Shaka’ll ask me to join anyway).
I can’t say I’ve ever put this much conscious thought into playing any one map. I think just slowing down and thinking about every turn critically has already helped.
So how'd I do? Did too much of my builder come out? Is my plan for next round a sound one?
I look forward to the critiques and advice. Thanx all ...
