Please help me be a better warmonger!

Two comment:
1: nice pic - Final Fantasy Advent Children, right?
2: to OP: What terrain mod are you using?

1- Yep. :)
2- I'm pretty sure he is using Blue Marble terrain.

Thanks for the info!

Great starting location for Romans.

BTW, if you are getting bored with Civ, have you tried increasing the difficulty level? You should try emperor or higher. I got my ass handed to me on Immortal.

I’m not sure what you guys are going to think about this round, because where combat is concerned, not a damn thing happened.

I have a new-found respect for Sisiutil. Posting a game like this is actually a LOT of work!

I started the round by running more scientist specialists, boosting my science slider and changing my tech path directly to Priesthood. Whereas my original thought was to research Sailing and hook up my Iron to Rome ASAP, I didn’t see much point since I knew I’d be pausing my military buildup for the Oracle anyway.

NOTE TO SELF: If you’re not going to build Monasteries, don’t research Meditation. Meditation means Philosophy is bulbed. Polytheism results in Aesthetics, which both lead directly to Literature.

In true Roman fashion, I issued orders for my army of Workers to build roads all over the place. By the time I finish the Oracle, I won’t need Sailing.

My Chariots went out to knock off some Barbarian cities and do some scouting, though they really did very little of either. I sacrificed 3 of them knocking off two different cities, and another city was taken by Alexander.

In Rome, I used this “lull” to change the build to a Settler. Settling Deer/Fur/Silver right outside Rome’s doorsteps was a much cheaper way to boost happiness. I also decided to settle my GG in Rome. At least for now, I think it’s more important to start with lvl 3 Praets out the gate.

Also, being at war, I see Metal Casting soon, which is another 2 :) after Cows/Horses/Gold north of Rome.

In Tenochtitlan, I put the Library and all that seafood to work by running two scientist specialists. You’ll see why this is important in a few turns.

My next order of business was to raze the barbarian city and found that Deer/Fur/Silver city, which only cost me a mere 3 :gold: maintenance. I’ll eventually get around to resettling the barb city NW of the Cows for a Cow/Gold/Horse city ... not much growth, but plenty of Grassland for Cottaging.

Now how ‘bout that, eh? My population’s already at Domination level, so all I need now is to expand. However, I’m thinking about switching gears towards Conquest instead – just wiping the floor of everybody. Period.

So here’s my plight. In 13 turns, I’ll have a Great Scientist in Tenochtitlan, which I’ll use to bulb Mathematics. The turn after that, the Oracle will be completed, and I’ll choose Construction ... hopefully ... it’s pretty late in the game for the Oracle, so who knows.

But all was well ...

... except for the part where I chose Currency instead. Aside from the extra trade routes, Saladin had already approached me for a tech trade, so I knew I could get Alphabet from him at some point. Plus, I wanted my UU, the Forum, in Tenochtitlan and Moscow sooner than later so I could keep lightbulbing my way forward.

Organized + Mathematics + Chopping = VERY fast Courthouses. BTW, Confucianism was founded in Tenochtitlan.

In 410 BC, Saladin built the Pyramids and switched to Representation. If I’m not careful, this Protective monster is going to get away from me.

So that’s where I ended it. My economy isn’t the greatest, but it’s far from the shambles it was in a millennium ago.

Spoiler state of the world :

Saladin demanded I stop trading with the Greeks, and I gave in since I was already planning to work over Alexander next.

Shaka has a power rating 10% greater than mine, but in GNP, Production and Crop Yield, I’m leaps and bounds ahead of everybody.

Saladin will trade me Alphabet, but it’s going to cost either Currency or Construction – neither of which I want to give my biggest rival.

Shaka will at least entertain the notion of being bribed into war, but it’s going to cost techs.

I can still convert to Hinduism, so I might be able to soften up everybody a little to my upcoming wars.

Spoiler the maps :

What to do ... what to do ...

I think in roughly this order:
  1. Put all espionage points towards Saladin.
  2. Tech Civil Service -> Metal Casting -> Machinery -> Engineering.
  3. Prepare to found Cows/Horses/Gold before Shaka can.
  4. Keep an eye on Saladin to research Aesthetics & build the Statue of Zeus before he does.
  5. Adopt Hinduism (I was hoping somebody would’ve asked by now).
  6. Research Alphabet manually (9 turns).
  7. Bribe Shaka with techs to attack Saladin.
  8. Settle the next GS in Tenochtitlan (I don’t need Pacifism).
  9. Destroy Alexander.
  10. Destroy Saladin (hopefully, Shaka’ll ask me to join anyway).

I can’t say I’ve ever put this much conscious thought into playing any one map. I think just slowing down and thinking about every turn critically has already helped.

So how'd I do? Did too much of my builder come out? Is my plan for next round a sound one?

I look forward to the critiques and advice. Thanx all ...

I want to move past Monarch, but war is really holding me back. I've yet to win a decisive Domination victory on Monarch and not even one Conquest victory at any level but Noble.

If I can't win every victory type with relative ease or comfort at Monarch, then there's no reason for me to move up, imo.

you said in another thread that your diplo is weak. i hadn't even opened this thread before seeing your link there, since i am no help at teaching better warmongering. diplo, maybe. thoughts based on the glance screen:

- alex is the worst enemy of everybody who has one. don't trade with him at all, don't give in to demands from him, he gets nothing. he's designated enemy if he does live a while. no-brainer choice for next target as far as that goes. best target based on other factors (land, tech-advantage, maint. costs if you keep cities) is another matter i'll not consider.

- that also means trading with all the others is safe diplomatically. nobody will come demand that you stop trades with anybody but alex.

- it's fairly likely that somebody will declare war on alex. have a plan for what to do there. if you go for him before they do, it becomes even more likely that somebody dogpiles. have a plan for that too, as in "city X and Y i really really want to keep, i'll get those first so that nobody else captures 'em and ruins my day."

- everybody likes shaka. he's a no-brainer friend. if you DoW him you get a -1 with everybody but alex, and we don't care about him.

- shaka loves to go to war. i like to gift him a tech ASAP after meeting him to make myself a less likely target. doesn't always work. shaka has no worst enemy atm so there's no telling who he's likely to beat up. once you and alex are at war, you both become opportunistic dogpile targets for shaka. so if you can spare another "have a plan for this", i nominate "oops, shaka declared on me."

- i'd go hindu, especially if the happiness will help. yeah it's nice if someone asks but it's random.

i know you thought of at least some of that already, but it's all i can do.

I find that when I war monger, I like to have at least one city that is building wonders and bildings. The two most important wonders to get IMO are the Great Wall and the Oracle. The Great Library also helps out. When getting the Oracle, I try to make sure to have both writing and monarchy researched before I finish it so that I can get an early slingshot to feudalism. The +2 exp for my shock troops and longbowmen with city defense promotions are very important. When I am warring with my neighbors, an unexpected counterattack on my cities is always a possibility. If there are a couple of longbowmen waiting for his axemen, he just ends up feeding me exp. I can expand and feel a lot safer when my homefront is well defended.

To summarize the whole story so I can go to bed, I did just what I said I was going to do.

I eliminated Alexander, Saladin (The Pyramids went a LONG way towards putting my economy on par to keep up the conquest). Then I subjugated Shaka and Sitting Bull for the win.

In the midst of it, I used a Great Spy and a Great Merchant/Great Scientist to sustain a 20 turn Great Age that ended in all of my combat-hardened Praets upgraded to Macemen. (I ran 0% science and all Merchants for +125 GPT.)

Sitting Bull was ridiculously hard to get rid of. His Dog Soldiers were an even match against my Praets, and his Protective Totem Pole Longbows were stupid strong

This pretty much explains what happened. I had great production in Rome, and most of the cities I founded had at least 3 hills in their BFC. I simply hade more of everything.

That's my earliest win and highest score ever. Thanks for all the input (in this thread and in the other warmonger threads out there). I look forward to my next warmonger game.
