I also like the idea of toying around with maleficium in early game without necesarrily falling if renouncing it before getting caught..

Maybe it can be made through a voluntary action to renounce maleficium without being compelled to do it by another player (for a price, and with restrictions on how deep you are engaged on the evil tech tree. Or with a ritual which length depends on the number of technologies to renounce. During the ritual, the prophecy of Va can still be made, and make me fall).

And a question: after being forced to renounce maleficium, should a civ be allowed to run for the protector victory ? (not sure of what are the implications)

Does the maximum Mana pool scale with the number of civs (or with mapsize)? If not it certainly should scale to one of those values for the sake of balance.
