Quick Questions and Answers

BNW itself is a standalone expansion and as such it does not include all prior DLCs though this is not strictly accurate either.
BNW includes:
The New Gameplay Systems introduced in GnK like Religion, 100HP, Ranged Naval Combat...
Ethiopia (which was in GnK)

If you want a FULL Civ V experience,

Get Gold Edition upgrade for your Vanilla. Gold Edition includes all DLCs (which includes GnK) prior to BNW. Then, buy BNW.

You probably don't have line of sight on the capital. If it is slightly in shadow (compared to other cities), you need to get a unit close enough to serve as a "spotter." Or you can assign a spy to sit in the capital -- they can serve as spotters.

I've a question on specialists. I know what they are used for and about the extra food they consume / unhappiness they generate etc. however I have no idea how they're actually generated.

Is one generated after a set number of turns? Does it depend on the amount of excess food in a city? I'd expect some sort of points system as per GPeople generation, however I've never seen any building or modifier that relates to specialist generation.

Thank you in advance!

Specialists are citizens that you put in buildings rather than on the map working the tiles. Some building have one or two specialist slot that you can fill with a citizen.

Ah okay. So any citizen can become a specialist simply by placing them in a slot... but they only generate the extra unhappiness / consume the extra food when you place them in a slot and turn them in to a specialist.

Thank you for clearing that up. Not sure how I haven't realised that before now...!

Specialists NEVER generate extra unhappiness, any more than they consume extra food.

All citizens generate unhappiness and consume food, whether they are working a tile, working as a specialist, or unemployed. If you have the social policies from Freedom, specialists generate LESS unhappiness than other citizens or consume LESS food than other citizens.
