RB1 - Cuban Isolationists

John 5:23

"That all [men] should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him."

What, is that some kind of veiled Sid reference? Something about Soren "inheriting" the series?

Jester: Ha! Good one. Very good.

Civ4: MANY right answers!

OK, back to the game now.

1882AD: Still on the first turn! :crazyeye:

From those tiny islands we've settled, we not only got three dyes (one hooked up)...
We also got an Aluminum source!

So back to the island invaders.

The only thing I can do up there for the moment is to secure the city.
I move the Rifleman from Ravenna over and upgrade it to an Infantry.

The AI will most likely pillage, but we can't attack them until I can use the Infantry unit.
Good thing I saved some cash this turn! (I also upgraded some units on the mainland.)

Note the unhappiness in the shot above. :( We already suffer some War Weariness!

Back on the mainland, you saw the stack inside York.
Check out the stack coming in from the west!

I've moved another Infantry unit on to that hill (killing the Catapult there).

That's it for the first turn. That's the end.

IBT 1882AD: I have "show enemy moves" on, so I see a ship dancing around:

This right after that weak, exposed Rifleman was killed.

Notice the research in to Fascism? I was going to go Radio for Bombers, but...
The WW is already getting thick and it's going to get worse.
We may have to go to Police State for a bit.

A stack of SEVEN units invades our territory.

They also hit that Infantry on the hill again. First a Redcoat bites it.

Then a Cavalry attacks and dies, but does damage, and the second Cav wins!

Not the best luck, but my unit did kill two barely-obsolete enemy units.

They send in two sacrificial Knights to rip up one of our Towns at Rosa:

Don't think the English are just going to roll over and play dead.
This may be "only" Prince, but the AI will win some battles and put up a fight!

Thus ends turn one. Next up, turn two!

- Sirian

Great story! Long time reader, first time poster, and this thread is the #1 case for me getting Civ 4! I can't wait until the next installment.

1884AD: The invaders were left to pillage, but now I'm ready to strike back.

You know what happens to horse thieves, right? :satan:

(Oh, and don't even THINK ABOUT stealing my sheep, OK? OK?!?)

That 7-stack is a city killer if left unattended. At least it could be.

Their Infantry only lost 2 Str taking out our wounded Rifleman. Heh.

Our Tank is wounded, too, but only slightly. So here we go.

YEAH! That's what I'm talkin' about. 3XP gained from two fights.
That Tank is now a LEVEL 5 UNIT. West Point here we come, baby!

Having peeled the top off their main offensive stack, I turn my attention back to our offense.

York!

Bombard.

Cannon (accurate)
Cannon (accurate)
Catapult (accurate)
Cannon (unpromoted)

Defenses ZEROED OUT.

Only six units left in the city? Wow.
They were using York as a forward staging area for their offensive.
Now those units moved out, leaving only the city defenders.
Some of which are longbows!

ATTACK!

(And yes, I do have an Axeman in my attack stack.)
(There to absorb some of the Collateral Damage if they were to have brought the artillery to bear.)
(Apparently, I absorbed most of their Catapult "mobile defense" with earlier incursions.)

Mopping up, now.

And just like that, York has fallen in to Cuban hands.

Since the Axeman wasn't needed as a human shield for, like, valuable units...
I might as well see if I can use him to kill an exposed Catapult...
...without spending the turn of a valuable unit on the task.

Straight up even odds. 50/50.

Oh well, I tried. One unit less in unit support costs.
(Every cloud has a silver lining!)

I bring in a new Tank, unpromoted, and slay one of the two Town-pillaging Knights. Then...

I heal 87.5% of the damage taken in that fight by using the three promotions.
Barrage! Great little promotion for hitting stacks of obsolete enemy units.
Kill the one on top and damage the whole stack!
Not recommended for "fair" fights, though.
(I'm not the biggest fan of "suicide artillery" tactics, for general use.)
(Only do that when I can't fight and expect my elite units to survive!)

If you get all the way to Barrage III, you get a bonus 10% vs Gunpowder, which is way cool.

BLITZ!

Pow.

Collateral Damage. Nasty stuff.

Too bad that unit has attacked twice already.
I'd be OK with him going again!

EVERY DOG HAS HIS DAY

So after wounding the Redcoat in the barrage, he's down to 11.8 Str.
With his Combat I promotion, that's a net of about 13 Str.

Now get this. Although the Knight is at 10 Str, below the Redcoat and Grenadier...
Those are Gunpowder units, so when my Pinch-promoted Tank attacks...
The Knight has the best odds, and steps up to the slaughter. :crazyeye:

My Tank is now wounded, but with +35% vs this target, that's about 23 net.
23 net Str on my side vs 13 net Str on his side is good odds for me!
(The real odds of me winning are way better than 2 to 1!)
Nevertheless, be aware, when fighting with wounded units, you WILL lose some of them.

"Every dog has his day."

That's a line I used to use on text macro (taunt) vs Descent opponents.
If an underdog pulled a great move on me and slapped me around in one fight...

"Every dog has his day."

...and then it's my turn again. :cooool:

Haha! Having this much fun is illegal in eighteen states. :rotfl:

Which ones?
If one's NJ, I'm getting the hell out

Very nice Sirian! This game is absolutely crazy!

I'm betting on you guys getting a Domination victory (heck, you might even be able to nab a Conquest if you can get a beach head on each continent!).

Speaking of victory, what's the progress on your culture victory?

Half what it would otherwise have. (If you have barracks -> 4XP, drafted from that city would be 2XP, which is what we had in most cases when I did that round of drafting.)

- Sirian

Thanks. But ah, that seems painful! So do you think draft is good in general?

Really? To me, it seems much more viable in Civ4 than it ever was in Civ3. I don't recall ever drafting more than a few units in Civ3, whereas I am considering doing exactly what Sirain did in a game I am playing right now.

I drafted a lot in Civ3. ::shrug:: :)

It's meant to be balanced, which in this case means attaching a cost to using it. Should be worth it in some cases, not in others. Obscure civics with limited use are of course worth more to the Spiritual leader, but I do use Nationhood even when I have to go through anarchy to get there, if the need is high enough!

- Sirian

I'd guess that "current build overflow correction" is the number of hammers that would overflow from this build, and thus saved for the next one.

Yoo Hoo, Sirian :wavey:

How is the holy war comming on? Or have the English :whipped: your sorry arse so bad you are ashamed to show your face around here

Maryland wins in OT, Sulla should be in high spirits he had a great game! Can't wait to hear how the rest of This game turns out, great thread guys!

Yeah, that's the ticket. Lizzie is beating me like a rented mule. :mischief:

Cut me some slack. I'm trying to figure out how to steal Sulla's thunder by capturing London on my round. :p

I don't understand how you RB folks think, but I love reading about it.

That's the beauty of these guys. They just don't know when to say, "Enough is enough". First they go and give themselves a rediculous variant to 'make the game more interesting'. THEN they go absolutely nuts with the whole 'Hydra' thing. Now Sirian is going for a capital city that is likely defended by a bajillion units within 10 turns. TEN TURNS!?!?

And on top of that they're considering a Domination win. Domination? In an isolationist variant?!?! Yeah. Right. 'Enough' is just not in their vocabulary, but it sure makes it fun as all get out to read (not to mention educational).

What's weird? I totally dig it. I bet these are just the things you say to yerself when yer playing, except these guys aren't ashamed of sayin 'em out loud :D. They even made me start posting after 4 years of lurking :wavey:

Go RB! :goodjob:
