SGFN-09: Constantinople stands alone!

Lurker's comment: I haven't logged in to Civfanatics for a year, but I believe there are more SG's on the go now then 2 years ago. Some names I'm not seeing anymore - Anaxagoras, Rodent - but I'm probably seeing even more new names - Bowsling, GamezRule, Del62, CKS, Sparthage...
SG's dying has always been the case - it was probably worse when there were still more people playing, due to more casual fans instead of hardcore fans. Sometimes SG's got finished by completely different people than the ones who started it, like with Eldar08 or Myth02.

Played.

Lurker's comment:

Just a question, why you guys building Leos over Shakes, wasnt Leos a pre-build?

Gad! Leo's was indeed a Shakes prebuild, in a 20k game, Shakes is , oh 4 times better culture-wise than Leo's. Plus, it allows you to maximize shields and population. I wish it had been checked with me or read in previous discussions, but oh well.

Edit: The save shows it as not too late...whew! As soon as you resume play, switch to Shakes, don't worry about wasted shields. Next turn, start Cope's. Leo's is very low priority, if we lose it, no biggie. Our next target should be Cope's, then Newtons, and then we work on lesser wonders.

Sorry I got torqued there. I was worried. It will be a busy set of turns maximizing our capital.

Switch to Shake's, wasting 72 shields :nono:

Trade Banking to Mongols for 29gpt + 13 gold + Gunpowder. Neither Zulu nor Greece can offer anything worthwhile to trade.

Set sliders to 2.8.0 (we don't need the lux slider at this point). Chem in 6, +5gpt.

Give the Zulu a boot order. They declare!
vKnight kills a Zulu Archer near Intombe and promotes.

Bomb an Ottoman ship near the capital.

IBT:

We see some ships move, and a few Zulu units invade our land.

Constantinople (not Istanbul :D): Shake's > Cope's
Madrid: Worker > Courthouse
Isandhlwana: Rax > Court

Turn 1 (770 AD):

Knight kills Impi
IS Malcolm bombs Ottoman ship near capital.

Move a few units (like sending a pike S from Barcelona - he's wasted in the center of our empire like that)

Change Zaragoza to Worker from rSpear.

IBT:

Lose an exposed Knight to a Zulu Archer :(
Greeks demand Astro. I tell him to go stuff it. He declares.

Turn 2 (780 AD):

IS Malcolm sinks Ottoman ship.
Knight kills Zulu Horseman.

IBT:

Zulus and Greeks appear on our southern border -- the Zulus are going for the Iron, the Greeks look to be going for x.

Salamanca: 'duct > Knight

Caravel sinks (oops!)

Turn 3 (790 AD):

Knight kills Spear at Valencia
A-Cav kills Impi and razes Isipezi.
Move Army to block Greek access to Santiago ... he can only attack with one Knight this turn.

Change Madrid to Treb
Rush a Court in Intombe, switch Isand... to MDI

IBT:

Greek Knight dies on the points of the Pikes at Santiago.
Intombe: Court > Pike
Mongols start Leo's and Cope's.

Turn 4 (800 AD):

Lose A-Cav vs. enemy Knight. Justinian's Army sets the situation right.
Knight kills Zulu Horseman.

Looking at figures again ... short-rush a Court in Isand...

IBT:

Barbaropolis: Knights (we should consider the FP here though)
Seville: Lib > Treb

Turn 5 (810 AD):

IS Malcolm bombards yet ANOTHER Ottoman Galley.
Kill two Zulu Archers w/ACav and Knight

IBT:

Chem > Physics
Santander: Worker > Treb

Turn 6 (820 AD):

Join two Workers to Salamanca to boost production.
Knight kills Impi near Isand... preventing Wine pillaging. He promotes, too.
ACav kills Spanish Archer who just landed by Zaragoza.
eKnight rides down Zulu Archer.
Barely lose a Knight on an Impi

IBT:

 Zulus capture 6 slaves that I left unguarded by accident :wallbash:

Greeks lose another Knight on one of our Pikes.
Ottomans want to talk. They'll magnanimously offer peace in exchange for Banking. Nice try, guys.

Pollution strikes Constantinople.
Ottomans are building Cope's.

Turn 7 (830 AD):

A-Cav kills Zulu Archer near Isand
A-Cav kills Zulu Archer near Intombe
Justinian's Army kills Archer near Isand

Saltpeter hooked up.

IBT:

Toledo: Barracks > Knight

Turn 8 (840 AD):

A-Cav kills Greek Archer near Santiago
Lose another Knight on an Impi :(
A-Cav finishes off the Impi and nets two slaves from the Settler underneath.

IBT:

Barcelona: Uni > Rax
Isand: Court > Knight
Intombe: Pike > MDI
Salamanca: Knights

Turn 9 (850 AD):

Isandhlwana:

eKnight and eA-Cav each kill a Zulu Horseman. No Leaders though :(
A-cav kills Zulu Archer near Santiago

Slider to 70%

It's Turn 200, so I think it's a good time to hand off.

Crap! I guess I should have looked at wonder prices more carefully.

Isipezi should have been left there, it could of either grown, or fufilled it's extremely high flip chance. But I should have mentioned that at the end of my set.

What wonders/techs are we going for, now?

@ Shake's price -- no biggie, it was only 2 or 3 turns' worth of shields wasted.
@ Isipezi -- oops  Guess I was too aggressive! :hammer:
@ wonders/techs -- Cope's right now, Newton's as soon as ToG comes in (research it next after Physics).
After that, I'd go for Navigation to open up Magellan (3cpt), then go for Magnetism and finally Chemistry. That puts us in the IA for Steam, then I'd step back to Economics to build Smith's before researching more IA techs. Depending on the warfare situation at the time, I might squeeze in Military Tradition for the cavs, but that's not a high priority -- the wars are pretty stable right now.

Speaking of wars, I started some Treb builds. Having a few of those in Isandhlwana, Intombe, and Santiago would help vs. the trickle of units we're getting from the Greeks and the Zulu. If I'd had a Treb or two for pre-combat bombardment available, that would have saved us two or three Knights lost!

Regarding war aims, I'd like to make peace with Greece ASAP and continue the war against the Zulu. Kick them off the continent if at all possible. OTOH, the war against Spain really suffered as I moved troops to deal with the Grecian threat.

My thoughts on tech is get to the next era as fast as possible, which means Chemistry=> Metallurgy=> Physics=> ToG=> Magnetism. In some games, I'd gift up our SCI buddies, but not this one. Why help the competition? I want steam to get our capital railed, but not enough to risk somene getting ahead of us. Hopefully we don't lose Cope's in a Leo's cascade, but no guarantees.
