Thanks for the PPP update. I think we are close to ready to play, but I am concerned that the plan for the attack on Moscow needs more detail that you've been able to provide.

War Plans
Continue to eradicate Ragnar.

OK. I posted some detail about how this might work. Are you going to follow that? Do you have a better idea? Doing it well means hitting Izzy sooner.

Rally troops in old England for DoW at Moscow on T249. We will have 4 Galleons with 2 Frigates escorting. Troop count will be 8 Muskets and 4 Trebs. 5th Galleon is 1 turn behind with 1 Treb and 2 Muskets for back up.

Sounds OK. You're landing 1W of Moscow on the turn of the DOW and then attacking the next turn? When are the spies going to arrive, and how? They've only got six turns to get to Moscow from MC, and one is not yet built, so there is not much leeway for "making it up as you go". I don't even know whether it is possible - but if it isn't we need to plan for that, too!

I'd look at it and post a suggestion for a plan, but my time producing plans have been wasted before...

What forces will be landing on Hittite island to capture its food tiles for it?

Navy upgrades first. In the east 2 Triremes to Frigates and Kon-Tiki.[/COLOR]

I think we can get away with just 1 trireme to frigate here. They are expensive and we can use the gold to buy a unit in the west where we seem to need it more.

Kon-Tiki does not have to be upgraded. We have 4 galleons soon enough for the strike on Moscow, and K-T can drop units in several trips north of Hittite as the Moscow force travels.

I would rather have the gold to buy units in the west for a new stack to hit Cathy from her East side. That stack will be the beginning of the stack to take out willem.

Use Spy to insight revolt in Moscow the turn we attack.

I would like 2 spies sent to Moscow. yes the odds of the spy mission are reduced for the 1st spy, but I would much rather have a 60% chance followed by a 85% chance rather than just 1 85% chance. Not sure if you are committed to this or not.

No specialists until switch to Caste then go back to max Merchants.

I really think a spy specialist and an engineer is fine before the switch to caste system. We want the specialists because the :gp: will get the great person a turn earlier if we run an engineer and/or spy specialist. Even if we get the spy or engineer I'm happy (think of it as diluting the scientist, really the only type of great person we don't want is a great scientist)

Almost fully military building only at this point.
Drafting 3 units every turn with 1 from London, and 1 each from the other cities on a rotational basis. SM, PC, FC have not been drafted yet. Generally the approach is to whip everything we can before we switch back to Caste in 2 turns. Once we switch out of slavery and into US, we will buy units as gold allows.

Why 4 treb? why not more musketeers in case Cathy has a large stack? We can have 10 musketeers and 2 treb for sacrifices if necessary after the spy revolt?

I really think 10 musketeers and 2 trebs is enough for moscow. I would rather hit the cities north of Hittite. you could have 4 treb and 2+ musketeers to hit the city north of Hittite at the same time you hit Moscow. You can adapt once you see what moscow has with the spies if necessary. But I would assume you do not need more than the 10 musketeers and 2 trebs and 2 spies I'm suggesting.

Assuming ron can play tonight or tomorrow, it is going to work better with mabraham's planned trip next weekend for him to take the next set. So I'll switch with him.
 
I agree with the comments.

I also think the time for micromanagement is over. big decisions like who and where to attack = great. I'm happy with Ron working out the finer details as he goes along.

We've been saying for more than a week now that we need to get sets played in a couple of days. We've got 19 days left and I think there's at least 40 turns to play out. So far, this set has taken five days. We all know people get busy, but if we are too busy to plan and play, it's better for the team to skip a set now, and have one later.

aj is right that the time for micromanagement is over. All I really want for this set is to be sure we can get the spies to Moscow in time for the T249 DOW, and that Ron's aware of the other considerations that have been raised (Ragnar war plans, Moscow unit composition, Hittite island unit composition, and building stack east of Cathy), and will incorporate them into his play.

Looks reasonably good.

I see we have two spies on a boat such that they arrive in Moscow during T249, which is good for a T249 DOW-and-land and T250 espionage-revolt and capture of Moscow.

Moscow's units look beatable, also.

Next turn I suggest moving the spies first to see what units might be on the tile 1W of Moscow. If it's occupied, I think the galleons should move two tiles east to a neutral tile, DOW, and then have enough movement points remaining to land the stack east of Moscow if necessary.

We have three muskets landing on Moscow that have an upgrade in hand. They will be the stack defenders IBT T249 and T250, so at least one of them should get a C1 upgrade then. We'll probably want at least two of them with C1 for attacking longbows, but if things have gone well then we need to think about having a healthy defender for the stack of survivors outside the city, and a healthy defender in the city at the end of T250. That might mean saving the last upgradeable musket to capture the city with, so he can upgrade-heal after the battle. Cathy does have a stack somewhere and we have to be wary of it.

We have two more spies in Nidaros and another building. That's more than enough, I think.

I see that reinforcements have come to Viking-land en masse. Progress has been fast, but I think we need to focus on swinging galleons back to the north of that land mass, lest we kill Ragnar in 10 turns and have nothing useful to do. Izzy can wait, we'd rather kill Cathy and get started on WvO than worry about Izzy.

Haithabu is reasonably likely to fall this turn - if so, the reinforcing trebs down to the south-east of Haithabu should change course and head for Haithabu so we can set up landing on Jelling via the inland lake. During that, we should arrange for one galleon to end up SW of Haithabu so we can do a naval landing on what will be Ragnar's last two cities (which used to be Izzy's city(s)). Walking overland would take forever.

Killing Ragnar off lets us draft out of his cities sooner (because his culture goes away, so we get to the 10% culture threshold by default), so that is an objective worth achieving. However, because we've built nothing of a stack to start a pincer move on Cathy's mainland, we'll take ages to kill her. That's not the end of the world - but finishing killing Ragnar, in order to draft out of his cities is necessary to make the decision to reinforce that attack correct.

The bad thing about killing Cathy slowly is that we have to finish her before we can start on WvO, and he's 11 turns from Astronomy. Fortunately, he seems to have few boats and few coastal cities, so his UU shouldn't hurt us too much.

Eight of our cities are building muskets. That's about six too many, I think. We currently have about three times as many non-siege land units as siege units, and we're going to be taking losses on seige units more than losses of muskets. We can draft muskets. We can't draft trebs. We can buy a unit every turn or two (probably boats at the moment, but that might slow down soon), but I think our tile hammers ought to be going largely into siege units.

Hastings has nearly built a second musket. Cleaning out that barb spearman will give us our Woodsman III medic, and we'll have the other musket as another candidate for that. However, that should be the last musket built in Hastings, I think. We are going to need masses of trebs to deal with Cathy's three longbows per mainland city.

CC should run another merchant, losing more food. We're in no hurry to build the fifth spy, but we want to maximize the chance of a Gmerchant in 5 turns.

The Privateer in BCM is a bit novel, but I guess it'll get some navy kills if we ever finish building it.

Hittite didn't start the barracks I suggested, so we'll have to chop that out later before we can draft Hittite to the ground.

The settler in GH is for the gems site SE of WvO's cities. A galleon should stay ready to take it when built, picking up Strauss from BCM on the way. It will want some defenders to arrive, too.

I don't have time this morning to comment, but these comments I agree with. I took a quick look and there is a barbarian spear near Hastings that the musketeer should deal with just in case you missed him. as mabraham points out.
 
Okay so my trip got cancelled and I had some time to look at the save...

Revolt in Moscow
right now we need 793 espionage for the city revolt in moscow. This required value will likely increase. We have ~720 right now and are earning about 20 per turn. We need to increase this with the slider and/or spy specialists.

It is significantly less than ideal to revolt with 0 turns stationary in moscow. The odds of success go up by about 20% for 1 turn stationary in addition to a reduced espionage cost. I don't think we have time to have the spies wait for 1 turn in Moscow if we take it T250. So you might want to consider delaying the DoW to T250 and attack to T251 so the spies get this increase in success and reduced cost. If you do then you don't need to increase the espionage rate most likely since we will get the 10% discount.

I think you can keep the workshop in CC I looked at the :gp: and even accounting for the decrease in :gp: rate for the GA ending I think an extra merchant doesn't get the great person a turn earlier. So keep the workshop I think for now and even after then end of the GA.
Edit: of course you could turn of some of the big food and get the merchant maybe in 5 turns if you turn of the workshop... as mabraham suggests above. It is better to turn off the corn this turn during the GA rather than after. I think you turn off the workshop and the Corn and maybe we have enough excess food to get the great person in 5 turns.

City improvements and build suggestions
I think London should just max its food now at least for sure after the end of the GA. The food produced now will let us draft each turn for a longer period of time. more important than building a musketeer the hard way. Although a Grassworkshop is still better than coast probably.

Nottingham doesn't need more workshops. I would think it might need a farm but no more workshops.

York needs workshops instead Or London needs another farm instead.

Silver Lode is draftable now

Canterbury should probably work the farm after the GA ends

you might want to switch canterbury to a galleon this turn and buy it next turn. We have more units than we can transport in London.

Of course you might want to buy the galleon in Nottingham to pick up units from PC too.

Globally the war plan can change. It looks like you can swing the treb you have south of Ragnar up to his west side and then some of those units could be used to hit Cathy from her SE instead of my original suggestion of going around the north of Willem with a new force and hitting her from the NE.

Longer term war plans
actually with a fort NW of Jelling we can get all of our ragnar forces to Cathy's SE instead. That is better alternative than my original suggestion of going around the north of Willem. We can likely split the forces from Ragnar half to Izzy and half to Cathy.

To build this fort and get our culture around it might be difficult in a reasonable time line. I think we can do it though.

Or alternatively, we could use a settler to cut the penisula to Jelling's west, that would get our galleon around that land mass and to cathy significantly faster. Might want to buy a settler in Ragnar's former capital for this purpose

idle work for worker in ragnar's lands that might be useful
Probably won't matter in time but the worker might be able to build a fort where the pikeman and longbow are and you could get units dropped next to Ragnar's city in his NW. This fort might be nice longer term as well for increase mobility. We need our culture over this fort as well to use this way, but that should come with border pop in Ragnar's former capital.
edit: of course we would have to have several forts for a complete path through Ragnar's lands. I think it is worth doing since we likely won't use the worker for anything else important.

I have finished. Mostly went according to plan with 1 very large exception. No spy induced city revolt was possible in Moscow, so it took an extra turn to take it. I will post more later, I am late.

war is a crazy business with so many units and galleons so things look pretty good. Too bad about the lack of foresight with espionage required for revolt in Moscow.

I think the earliest we can finish off Ragnar is T255. I think it makes sense to galley chain some musketeers down to Madrid using Galleon 1 , 4, and 6 I believe, cutting through Ragnar's land to set up an amphibious assault on Madrid and support the 4? treb + 3 musketeers on land that could be on land near Madrid to attack.
With the units near Bjorgvin and landing the maces and the musketeer currently protecting the new gems site city which really doesn't need protection in my opinion)

Ivory will be available when Bjorgvin comes out of revolt after capture (maybe T258?)
we could cancel the dye trade with Willem (since we have our own dyes) But no happiness from the AI it looks like)

Controlling costs.
I think we raze Madrid, but we keep Bjorgvin since we will get the ivory from it.
Might want to work commerce tiles or build more wealth depending on the situation.
I think cities near the front can still build units, but cities far from the front should build wealth and maximize wealth output with whatever tiles make sense.
We might want to reduce drafting to 2 musketeers every turn and avoid drafting if it cripples a city now. We are running a deficit gold wise it seems. So we need those cities producing some wealth and commerce.
We can resume drafting 3 per turn from Ragnar's cities once he is eliminated and London perhaps.
We might want to error on the side of razing cities now instead of keeping them too now.

Since we are in a wealth deficit, we need to consider saving the gold we make instead of buying units. I think things are going to improve significantly when Ragnar is eliminated, but I would think twice about buying a unit now.

miscellaneous
might be nice to get spies to Willem's cities if possible as soon as possible. With 50% discounts we should be able to get 2 or perhaps 3 revolts.

new Great general would be nice to get a super medic or perhaps just give 2 xp to 10 units if it can easily be arranged. GG might be able to scout izzy's lands before we use him in this way.

Not sure we need that many there, but maybe. Also, was planning on getting units there mostly with the 2 galleons already in the area.

Great to see the military machine in full swing. Nice work Ron :)

DoW = closed borders = more costly espionage missions. We should certainly take note of this for future spy induced revolts. And attacking a city on the same turn as the DoW isn't typically feasible if we need a turn to drop the troops onto the beaches. It might make amphibious assaults more attractive, but more likely we just need to factor in the extra cost of the espionage mission without the trade bonus.

Does Madrid have any Religious Shrines? Ie, might it be valuable to keep for that reason?

War plans... Willem is still pretty small isn't he? Can't we send the Ragnar troops + some extras to take him out next. It might slow us down finishing Cathy, but once we have her Great Lighthouse we could just camp for a little while.
