THE FRENCH REPUBLIC
A History of the Civ World

The Civ World in 1950

We begin the story in the early 1950's. The French Republic is an old country with a new beginning. Peaceful democratic elections elect President Sam B of France. The creation of the communist Soviet Union in Africa and threats from the Soviet Union to Egypt lead to fears of war. But the French Republic makes a stand -- it will not tolerate the Soviet Unions threats. Both nations agree on a shaky peace deal, but for how long will it last...

Franco-Soviet Relations 1940-1950

France-Soviet relations during the 40s were normalized bilateral relations. They were not offensive at any time from 1940 - 1949.

However, upon Egypt's completion of the State of Hilgaria, a semi-autonomous region of Egypt, relations between the two nations began to deteriorate.

The State of Hilgaria (circled)

Egypt had signed the Franco-Egyptian Mutual Protection Agreement in 1921, which processed Egypt and France as allies.

On March 7, 1949, the Soviet Union threatened Egypt's Hilgaria State with military force if it were to expand it's borders into Soviet territory. France claimed Egypt had the right to expand her territory as she pleased, as the northern point of Soviet territory was not recognized by France.

The ensuing proxy wars (or maybe even a full out war...), diplomatic tension, arms and technology race would be some of the most diplomatically intense crises of the century.

I hope you will enjoy the story, I sure enjoyed the game... :mischief:

1951 AD

The Cold War as it was termed by many nations in the early years began in 1950. It barely managed to last one year before an armed conflict. Of course France, in no way wanting a war, didn't intervene militarily at all.

The Conflict
The conflict began in mid-1951 as Soviet patrols off of the Persian coast were spotted. Persia immediately prepared itself for war, as the Soviets headed directly to their shores.

Location of the Soviet patrols

Persia was fast to react to the patrols, but not fast enough. The Soviet Union landed it's load on what would be the real-world Ireland and United Kingdom.

Soviet troops in Persia

France hadn't expected the Soviet Union to attack Persia, of all places. But the real reason was territorial annexation, territory which the Soviet Union said belonged rightfully to their government. Persia never had a strong army, and with the Soviet invasion, they were overwhelmed. France sent 1400 gold to Persia's government to help pay costs for immediate military buildup.

The Soviets were held back at Gordium by the now engaged Persian army.

I have to say that I'm enjoying it. It sort of reminds me of my own writing style way back in the day when I was still doing stuff w/ Civ2.

Keep up the good work! :D

(I especially like this map) Map of Europe, with Persian troops and Soviet troops shown.

The reaction of Persia to the unprovoked war was outrage. Whole cities were converted into soldier-making machines, and economies were converted to the war effort. Persia would not fall without a fight. The Soviet Union on the other hand, always had half of it's cities converted into military machines, so they were always prepared for war.

Persian Invasion

The Soviet Union continued to occupy real-life UK and Ireland. So the decision was made in 1951 that the Persians would invade the islands to re-occupy them, then drive the offensive Soviet forces completely out of R.L. UK and Ireland.

Persian invasion route

As the invasion commenced Soviet troops rearmed and regrouped in preparation. Cities were buffered up and whole city economies were put on military production by the Soviet Union in R.L. mainland UK. Persia decided that the invasion of R.L. Ireland would come later, after R.L. UK was secured.

The opening stages of the invasion saw massive amounts of Persian infantry and bombers. The 1400 gold from France came in extremely helpful, and payed for many infantry. The infantry landed south of R.L. United Kingdom and began overwhelming military campaigns. Within hours, the Soviet Union was run out of South UK. The next army landed in East R.L. UK and gained a victory, encircling and running the Soviet Union out of East UK. The next army landed at North UK and also gained a victory, with help from the Eastern UK group. The Soviet Union were run out of R.L. mainland United Kingdom within days of the invasion.

With R.L. mainland UK firmly in Persian hands, the Persians decided to invade R.L. Ireland.

Large brown squares = Soviet held cities at time of invasion, small brown dots = soviet troops at time of invasion and blue arrows = Persian invasion route.

Soviet troops at the time of the invasion were thinly spread, not well equipped and struggled to retrieve supplies. This was the probable cause of the victory for the Persians when the invasion commenced.

Peace

Peace between the Persians and the Soviets was signed shortly after the invasion. Why this is is still unknown, maybe because the Soviet troops were thinly spread and had no hope of winning.
The Soviets still held some Persian territory at the time of the signing of the treaty but the Persians felt this was alright.

Soviet and Persian held territory at the time of peace.

This ended the Persian-Soviet War.

Good so far. Looking forward to the parts where France gets involved - the parts where America was involved in your last story (most of it) were my favorites. But how do you play Civ so quickly? It's only a few weeks since your last story and you already have another 1950 Earth game!

I play three of four Civ games at a time (sometimes there is nothing to do on the weekends) and remember what happens. Usually takes a long time, but Warfare took a long time to write, and all the while I was playing this game as well. :mischief:

France gets involved soon too... :)

1953 AD

Just like in real life, the Chinese and the Soviet Union have strong relations (Well, in real life they had strong relations). Trade agreements, peace treaties and passage deals benefit both nations strongly. And Just like in real life, there is a Sino-Soviet split. However this one was more upfront and direct. It began in the beginning of 1953, when the Soviet Union requested China agree to their terms of a trade embargo against the Persians. China disagreed. The Soviet Union, feeling betrayed by it's closest ally, sends an intimidating Naval fleet to the coast of China's two semi-autonomous regions.

Locations of Soviet naval fleet during what was termed by many nations including France as the 'Sino-Soviet Standoff'

This standoff greatly worried the French Republic, and the President held a televised speech to the nation.

PRESIDENTIAL SPEECH TO THE NATION

"My fellow French citizens. In what began yesterday as on of the most shocking international events, the Soviet standoff with China, France is worried. The Sino-Soviet Standoff shows the world nothing else other than the Soviets unwillingness to negotiate or use diplomacy to solve their problems. Instead they turn their back on their closest ally, China. Sending a fleet to their region is considered an act of war, or other provoking hostility. This is why, together with our Persian friends and our English allies, we have signed an immediate blockade upon the Soviet Union. Any moves made by the Soviet Union upon any nation disagreeing with their moves on China, shall be deemed an attack upon the French Republic, and will require a full military and retaliatory attack upon the Soviet Union."

The French President ordered the blockade to begin immediately the next day, and the Soviet Union responded with more ships to China. The Sino-Soviet Standoff became the Sino-Soviet Crisis.

1954 AD

After relations crashed at a speed not even the French could have imagined, and with China's refusal to even start talking with the Soviet Union again, the decision was made by the Soviet Union to begin it's military campaign. The first act of war began when the Soviet Naval fleet sent to intimidate the Chinese government began bombing the Nanking Semi-Autonomous Province. This was met with an immediate declaration of war by the Chinese, but no declaration of war from the French. The French only responded in strongly condemning the Soviet campaign and sending massive amounts of financial aid to the Chinese, because they were fearing a wider war if they got involved.

The Soviet bombing of China.

The next act was from the Chinese, who built up their navy, and so began the naval Battle of the Nanking-Tientsin Sea.

The Soviets won the battle; and the Chinese felt they needed help. France turned away, exclaiming they were already sending major amounts of financial support, which they were.

So the Chinese turned to Scandinavia, their nearest 'neutral' neighbor that had a sufficient navy and land army force.

The Scandinavians accepted the MPP offer, however, they did not declare war on the Soviet Union.

1955 AD
French Involvement

The question of French involvement in the Cold War was not one that was to be debated for much longer. With the rise of Communism in Europe and Northern Africa, French President Sam B always found himself asking the same question, 'when is the right time to make a move' and it came. With a new foreign policy on Communism, by keeping it to one area and keeping it to a standstill for as long as possible, Communism could effectively be contained. The French involvement would not have to wait much longer. The time was here.

The first move, not made by France but triggered their military integration was the fall of the democratic government in the Ottoman empire and the rise of a Communist dictatorship in the Ottoman government. The announcement of another Communist government angered the French and military intervention was called for and voted on, overwhelmingly winning. The French launched their new 'containment' idea with the French invasion of the Ottoman empire in 1955.

French invasion

The French invasion was carried out smoothly. The goals of the war were to prevent any more Communist Soviet takeovers in Africa, and put a dent in the Soviet's military and make allies of the Soviet's realize that their system could not and would not work.

Three major battles occurred in the invasion, the Battle of Iznik, which was won by the French, the Battle of Kafa, which the French won and the battle of Bingol, which the communists won.

Location of important places after the French invasion. Bingol is located above the DMZ zone. (Spelt incorrectly)

The importance of Bingol was the need to capture large oil and rubber reserves that could fuel the French army without any needed support from home. However, the Communists had this set strongly in their sights and had the city defended extremely well.

The Soviet Union was quiet during the entire event. They felt the war with China was ten times more important than invading the Ottomans and beginning an actual war with the French, which would result in MAD, Mutual Assured Destruction of the both the Soviet and French states. However, they diverted massive amounts of financial aid to the Ottomans, who accepted it. The French, only days after the invasion announced the stopping of all financial aid to the Chinese after they felt confident enough that the Scandinavians would aid the Chinese enough. The financial aid was diverted to the Ottoman war effort.

Another important detail of the event was the construction of a Demilitarized Zone, which included the construction of about 20 forts, lined up against each other to prevent an Ottoman communist invasion of South Ottoman, until the French were ready to invade North Ottoman. Sporadic fights continued for several months.

(Note: On the map above, it says 'French Cities captured' this is a mistake; it's meant to say Cities captured by the French. :D)

1955 AD

Soviet Expansionism is probably the leading cause of war between the Soviets and other states. But the Soviets had a plan, they would only expand in to other nations which could in no way match their military strength. This meant no messing with France or America. China came close, but recent economic troubles and conflicts with the Soviets meant they were eliminated from the list.

The Soviets had managed to capture some of Ireland, and were looking now to the pacific. Situated on some of the Indonesian islands was the country of Portugal. The only country with a defensive pact with Portugal was Rome, but Rome's army was weak and their country was small, so the Soviets could mess with Portugal all they wanted. This is why in 1955 France signed a right-of-passage with the Portuguese and sent a 30,000 (1 health bar = 1,000 troops.) strong security force to the region to deter any possible Soviet attack.

Location of the French security forces.

Portugal was an 'developing' country. In the mid-1920's a massive economic downturn affected the world and affected Portugal. While the world recovered by the 1930's, Portugal was still lagging behind and in a steady decline. Portugal only had two trading partners, none of which were gaining Portugal any economic benefits.

This is why the Soviet Union felt Portugal was an easy target.

Soviet naval fleet of the coast of Portugal

The Soviet Navy, the worlds second strongest navy but the worlds most active navy had stationed roughly 10 naval warships and transports off the coast of Portugal. They had not attempted to gain further water access into Portugal.

They were soon retreated to a distance.

1956 AD

The Soviet naval bombing of China had been going on for a little more than two years. It was now when the Soviets thought that the Chinese army was majorly weakened, and now when the Soviets though that it was the right time to launch their ground invasion of China.

The Scandinavians had sent masses of troops to China, fearing that a successful Soviet invasion would mean a highly probable and probably a highly successful Soviet invasion of Scandinavia.

Soviet ground invasion of China

The Soviet invasion of China overwhelmed the Scandinavian and Chinese troops. They were overrun within hours of the invasion. But France, angered that the fall of the Ottoman communist government had only given way to the rise of the Chinese communist government was still stuck on what to do. They would be facing a two front war against the Soviets and didn't want to be destroyed, along with the Soviet Union after their agreed MAD position. (Mutually Assured Destruction. Both nations hadn't actually signed any formal agreement but both leaders knew it would be Mutually Assured Destrucion if war between them happened at any time.)

Rome replied by immediately requesting the Soviet withdrawal from China, fearing an invasion of their homeland.

But then France had an idea: The Soviet's allies colonial possessions.

(Soviet allies: Japan, Babylon and Zululand.
France allies: America, England, Egypt and Germany.)

(Note: These updates are too short, from now on, they'll be longer.)

So far so good. Nice quick work in southern Africa. Have the Soviets begun a land invasion of China yet? Looks like they should be able to do pretty well taking over China.

Thanks, and as you can see above... the Soviets have launched their ground invasion of China. :mischief: But I'm stuck on what to do about this one, I don't want full out war against the Soviets and I'm not sure if invading the Soviet's allies colonial possessions will be reacted with an actual front of war with the Soviets. Oh well, I guess we'll soon see... :)

1956 AD

Shortly after the Soviet invasion of China and the French plan to capture and destabilize the Soviet allies overseas territories, France began to explore what colonies would be suitable to an invasion.

(Note: On the first map in the first post it doesn't have a lot of these colonies marked, because most of them were colonized after 1950.)

The first island of the Zulu colonial empire considered for an invasion.

The first island considered (and accepted) for the first invasion was the Zulu island of Iceland, which was colonized in 1952. The French plan was to be quick, decisive and to use a large force to overwhelm the Zulu forces. The French government planned not to engage if Soviet forces were present on the island per the M.A.D. decision. But they were not, and only 3,000 Zulu troops were present on the island, which made it easy to invade and annex. The official decision was made to invade before 1958, to invade as soon as possible, and was announced to the French public in 1956. The invasion occurred in 1956, with 12,000 spare French reservists off of Greenland sent to Iceland.

French invasion of Zulu Iceland

The French ships made a turn around the island to check for Soviet troops, there were none, and the invasion went ahead. It was a clean, smooth invasion and the island was occupied and annexed by the French shortly afterwards.

The reaction from the Zulu's was immediate outrage, and they requested an immediate joint Soviet-Zulu invasion, of which the Soviets did not accept, probably per the M.A.D. decision. The Zulu's insisted on sending 9,000 troops to circle the island but the French warned this would only cause unnecessary harm to the Zulu army. The Zulu troops remain stationed far away from the island. This began the French occupation of the Zulu Iceland island.

France decided this would be the only colonial invasion for a while.
