A while ago we had a pretty extensive discussion about new wonders and projects to add to the mod in this thread. Over the last weeks I revisited it and compiled a list of my favourite suggestions and ideas for it so that I can put them for discussion again here.

Previously I was a bit more reluctant to add even more wonders to the mod, and the main problem was that there were too many wonders to build and that wonder stacking would become too powerful. This is less of a concern now that wonders per city are limited by culture level. Also, the current tech tree is a bit more aggressive with obsoleting wonders early.

As with the previous thread, the goal was mostly to fill later eras (Renaissance onwards, but especially Global and Digital) with more wonders, because they currently lack them the most. A secondary goal was having wonders for regions/religions that are currently not well represented. My decisions were also influenced where either the wonders have interesting potential effects or came with suggested effects. I also added a couple that I thought of while composing them.

Ancient

Dujiangyan Levee
(Construction, requires Rice) [China]
[no art yet]
+1 food for Farms and Paddy Fields in city radius
(I chose Rice instead of Confucianism to still link this wonder to East Asia without requiring Confucianism this early. Alternative effect: +1 food for river tiles - I consider this too strong)

Apadana Palace (Arithmetics, requires Zoroastrianism) [Persia]
Free Monument and Jail in every city, +50% improvement construction speed
(This should be useful during Persian expansion.)

Library of Ashurbanipal (Writing, requires Paganism) [Babylonia]
Extra research on city conquest
(Entire techs seem too powerful to me.)

Classical

Aqua Appia
(Engineering, requires Paganism) [Rome]
Free Aqueduct in every city
(Alternatively named "Great Aqueduct" if a more generic name is preferred.)

Jetavanaramaya (Engineering, requires Buddhism) [Tamils]
+2 health in all cities

Gondeshapur (Medicine, requires Zoroastrianism) [Persia]
+2 research per excess health
(Or simply +2 research per health from buildings.)

Al-Khazneh (Currency, requires Judaism)
+1 trade route per oasis in city radius
(This is the most distinctive building in Petra, "the treasury". Judaism to ensure location in the Middle East.)

Bamiyan Buddhas (Artisanry, requires Buddhism and Camels)
(no effect right now)
(I only include wonders where I have no idea for the effect if I think there's a good reason for it. Here it's that Buddhism has very little wonders and all of them are in east Asia.)

Nalanda University (Scholarship, requires Hinduism) [India]
+2 research per state religion building
(Sankore effect needs to be changed, see below.)

Cheomseongdae (Scholarship, requires Buddhism and Confucianism) [Korea]
+1 happiness per 20% research rate

Iron Pillar (Steel, requires Hinduism) [India]
[no art yet, but I think I can put something together]
Free Forge in every city

Medieval

Krak des Chevaliers
(Fortification, requires Catholicism and Islam in the city) [France]
Free Castle in every city, defeated city defenders have a chance to retreat to the capital

House of Wisdom (Education, requires Islam) [Arabia]
+200% research from great people discoveries

Alamut Fortress (Alchemy, requires Islam) [Arabia]
+10 experience for spies built in this city

Taoudenni Salt Mines (Guilds, requires Islam and Desert) [Mali]
[I think I can just repurpose some generic salt mine art here]
+1 commerce on desert tiles

Saint Sophia's Cathedral (?, requires Orthodoxy) [Russia]
+1 commerce per priest
(Mostly here to include a medieval Russian Orthodox wonder.)

Mount Athos (?, requires Orthodoxy) [Byzantium]
Free state religion monasteries

Prambanan (?, requires Hinduism) [Indonesia]
[No dedicated art, but I think I can repurpose something or put something together myself]
(no effect yet)
(Hindu wonder outside of India.)

Beta Giyorgis (Ethics, requires Orthodoxy) [Ethiopia]
(no effect yet)
(Christian wonder outside of Europe.)

Santa Maria del Fiore (Patronage, requires Catholicism) [Italy]
+100% great people birth rate
(This will replace the current Leaning Tower wonder.)

Silver Tree Fountain (Patronage, requires Paganism and Horse) [Mongolia]
[No art for the fountain itself, but for the surrounding palace. Still prefer to name it after the fountain because it is more unique]
Extra research and culture on city conquest

Kazimierz (Commune, requires Judaism) [Poland]
[No art yet]
+3 GPP per city with Judaism
(I really like this because it is genuinely Jewish wonder and also covers Poland. Not sure about the effect though, maybe great people or commerce based?)

Venetial Arsenal (Companies, requires Catholicism) [Italy]
+1 production per naval unit

Thomaskirche (Humanities, requires Protestantism) [Holy Rome]
+2 happiness in every city
(Notre Dame effect will need to be changed, see below.)

Renaissance

El Escorial
(Exploration, requires Catholicism) [Spain]
Extra gold for acquiring overseas cities, extra gold for spreading state religion

Torre de Belem (Optics, requires Catholicism) [Portugal]
Free Customs House in every city

Potala Palace (?, requires Buddhism) [Tibet]
City receives great people points on missionary success

Shalimar Gardens (Horticulture, requires Islam) [Iran]
+3 health, +1 happiness per excess health

Amsterdam Bourse (Economics, requires Protestantism) [Netherlands]
Free Bank in every city, +2 free merchants
(Porcelain Tower will need to be changed, see below.)

Itsukushima Shrine (Geography, requires Buddhism) [Japan]
+1 free specialist per Fishing Boat

Louvre (Sociology, requires Catholicism) [France]
Produces as much culture as every wonder you control
(In other words, the flat culture output of all wonders under your control is added to this wonder.)

Amber Room (Geology, requires Protestantism) [Germany]
[no art yet]
+2 golden age turns per defensive pact

Industrial

Bell Rock Lighthouse
(Metallurgy) [England]
+1 trade route in all coastal cities

Neuschwanstein Castle (Nationalism) [Germany]
Settling a great person restores 50% of great people points to the city

Brooklyn Bridge (Labour Unions) [America]
Free Levee in every city, +2 free engineers

Crystal Palace (Electricity) [England]
(no effect yet)
(Maybe something related to discovering new techs, either by yourself or others. I dislike a bonus for first discovery though because it reinforces already existing advantages.)

Tsukiji Fish Market (Refrigeration, requires Buddhism) [Japan]
+1 food on water tiles

Sagrada Familia (Film, requires Catholicism) [Spain]
[no art yet]
+10% commerce with Stone, Marble in all cities

Nobel Foundation (Journalism) [Vikings]

Golden Gate Bridge
(Infrastructure) [America]
+1 commerce from Scientist, Engineer

Bletchley Park (Radio) [England]
+50% chance to detect enemy spies, -50% chance of own spies being detected

Sydney Opera House (Tourism)
(no effect yet)

Montreal Biodome (Ecology)
+1 food from Nature Preserve, Marine Preserve in all cities

Vertical Forest (Ecology) [Italy]
[no art available]
(no effect yet)

+3 commerce for every desert tile in city radius

Hubble Space Telescope (Satellites) [America]
+100% research

Channel Tunnel (Robotics) [England/France]
+50% trade route yield from civs with friendly relations

Delta Works (Renewable Energy) [Netherlands]
[No art available, but I found a model in Google 3D warehouse that I might be able to convert]

Provides free power in all cities

Global Positioning System (Telecommunications) [America]

+50% intercept chance in all cities

Projects

Olympic Games
(Journalism)

World Fair (Electricity)

International Space Station (Satellites)

Large Hadron Collider (Superconductors)

Human Genome Project (Genetics)

My idea here is to have two new types for projects: competitive projects (Olympic Games and World Fair) and collaborative projects (ISS, LHC, Human Genome Project, could include ITER and The Internet as well). The idea for competitive projects is to give the builder advantages until the next civ builds the project, with the cost increasing for every consecutive projects. For collaborative projects, the benefit is only effective once enough civs build it, but then affects all of them, with a bonus for the civ to first complete it. I haven't thought much about the actual effects yet.

Changes to existing wonders

Leaning Tower
removed
Khajuraho +1 food from religious buildings
Notre Dame One less temple required per Cathedral
Itaipu Dam Free Hydro Plant for all cities on the continent
University of Sankore no effect yet (Free tech for every tech discovered by three others with the same state religion?)
Porcelain Tower no effect yet (+2 free merchants now at Amsterdam Bourse)
Versailles Free Estate in all cities, +2 free statesmen (To remove easy access to another GA for Christian civs and remove overlap with Taj Mahal)

The goal of this thread

The goal of this thread is mostly to make the wonders listed here work, i.e. complete required art/techs/effects. The list is already quite long, so the goal isn't to brainstorm even more wonders, and I have already tried to filter it somewhat. We should also try to filter wonders that are not interesting/relevant enough. If you feel you have a really good and developed idea for a wonder not on this list, you can still suggest it, but otherwise I'd like to encourage you to discuss the above points only.

For the Delta Works, perhaps a +% GPP and / or science (or commerce) per controlled water tile? Representing how Dutch knowledge of such waterworks is at the top of the world and exported to places from the USA to Japan.

RFCA has art which could be used for the Prambanan. RFCE has a model for the Kazimierz.

For the Nobel foundation, what about +2 gold for settled GP?

I am aware of RFCE's art for Kazimierz, but it's really low quality and also not very representative.

Shouldn't GPS be a project? America isn't it's sole user.

If Vertical Forest is designed for Italy, which is supposed to be full of specialists in its cities due to the lack of tiles, I think that this new wonder could give 1 food for every specialist just like older Republic civic did.

Doesn't it still do that?

EDIT: Then again, I haven't looked at Republic in a few days, according to the code it seems it gives 1 extra specialist yield.

Itsukushima Shrine built in 593ad, and Potala Palace first built in 7th century, so they are not Renaissance great wonders, better Medieval.
The current structures are from the 17th and 16th century respectively.

And may I ask why Leaning Tower be removed?
I don't really think it qualifies as a wonder, it's mostly a tourist novelty. It's just a regular campanile that happened to be built on weak ground.

It's owned by the US military. They could decide that they need maxium accuracy for some operation at any time, leaving us all without a way to find the next gas station.

Doesn't it still do that?
It does?

Burj Khalifa should require Islam and multiple oil resources in the city radius, otherwise too likely the British or French AI will build it in a random city with one desert tile

Khajuraho might be too good especially if it obsoletes late. +2/3:food: per city is big especially if England is getting it

Crystal Palace should maybe give a bonus to project construction? Allow multiple instances of Olympics/Worlds Fair in the same city?

Sydney Opera House maybe could give a commerce bonus for exports of mine resources.

Prambanan could give :hammers: on plantation tiles.

Agree that Itsukushima should be a medieval wonder buildable with Japan's starting techs. Japan should also have a late medieval/early Renaissance wonder from the Azuchi-Momoyama period like Kinkaku-ji that should give a free Great Artist

The Venetian Arsenal seems sort of weak here. I feel like that type of effect works well in the tactical warfare of Civs 5 and 6 but falls short here. That's just my first impression and I'll try and develop more input

I think Korea should also have wonders. Especially if Japan is going to be given additional wonders. In the current map Korea tends to be culturally overpowered easily by Japan, especially when Himeji Castle is built in Kyoto. The city defense culture modifier seems too powerful for me in that regard. For Korea, Cheomseongdae (column 6/7) and Gyeongbokgung/Changdeokgung (column 9) should be fine. RFCA has art for both.

I agree. How about we invert it? +1 production per controlled naval unit? Other ideas welcome.

I have to admit though that this wonder is in danger of not making the cut.

I'm partial to Cheamseongdae, any idea for an effect?

On that note, any idea about a modern wonder for Korea?

Cheomseongdae ("Tower of the Moon and Stars") is an observatory built shortly before Shilla managed to unify the Korean peninsula. It was the Oracle of RFCA. I'm not sure yet what effect to implement in DoC, but I suggest it should be something related to science. Maybe an agricultural effect too such as +1 :food: per land tile or per farm/paddy field/plantation.

Just to add, Changdeokgung is one of the palaces of the Joseon Dynasty. In RFCA it served as an administrative center and gave +10% :espionage:. I suggest adding this one to the game too, and give a government-flavored effect, such as 2 free statesmen, or free specialists. A culture-related one can also be added instead too, to counter Japan's Himeji Castle somewhat. Can't think of a modern wonder too, imo Korea's tourism is heavily history- and culture-based.

A lot of the historiography / mythology around Cheomseongdae is that it was made widely accessible. Maybe something like +1 happiness per 20% research rate? I always wanted to do an effect like that but it's just too powerful on anything but a wonder.

That sounds like an amazing effect, go for it!

I'll tentatively add it to the list.

The new Notre Dame effect, though thematically cool, feels a bit underwhelming. Maybe reduce it to two or even one temple per cathedral? Would that be too powerful? If Notre Dame obsoletes early enough, then I don't think it would be too powerful since Catholic medieval civs rarely control more than 4-5 cities. Could also tie the effect to cathedrals of the state religion only.

Happy as I am to see a wonder from the city I live in, I don't think the Montreal Biodome deserves a spot on this list. It really is just an indoor zoo. I don't know what the art looks like, but there's a chance you might have mistaken the Biodome for the Biosphere, which is a rather more interesting geodesic structure in Montreal (built by the Americans for Expo 67; now an environment museum). If possible I'd replace the Biodome by the Biosphere.

Brainstorming for effect ideas:
- Sydney Opera House: extra culture or gold when a Great Artist performs a Great Work
- Crystal Palace: something to do with the World Fair project, e.g. reducing the cost of the project or increasing its effects (whatever those are) (Come to think of it, this effect could also apply to another world fair wonder such as the Atomium, Eiffel Tower or Biosphere, but Crystal Palace is probably better since it's associated with the first world fair)
- Bete Giyorgis: Lalibela seems to be some sort of representation of Jerusalem, so it could duplicate the effect of your holy city + something else like grant a free prophet?

Other comments
- The requirement for Vertical Forest says Ecology, but that's no in the digital era
- Wonders that seem a bit unnecessary to me: Nobel Foundation, having both Brooklyn and Golden Gate Bridge, Kazimierz (great that it represents Judaism and Poland, but I'm not sure how a neighborhood can be a wonder)
- Vaguely disappointed that Pleistocene Park didn't make the cut, I liked the idea (assuming it's about resurrecting the mammoth and not just a natural park in the tundra)

How about the Venetian Arsenal does something with specialists? Maybe +1 XP for naval units per specialist in the city. That's a little bit crazy but that's just a first thought.
