Trading with Indians

is trading with indians really worth it early in the game?

i know it is later if you decide not to trade with europe any more but early in the game i find them kind of useless

Actually, I haven't played Civ4:Col (vanilla) for years.

Playing it with the major mods such as TAC or one of its offsets, RaR, trading with the natives is very useful, even early on.
