TSG 124 After Action Report

Right side first? Do you get an extra GS or two that way?
Perhaps not extra, but they come a bit sooner. On a 4-6 city Tradition game, I typically wait for the last naturally generated GS before pulling the trigger on Porcelain Tower, Liberty Finisher, and Hubble Space Telescope. The combination increases the cost of future great people by 400 points.

More importantly, I get the extra +17% science. This is better than the +2 science per specialist because it is generally a greater benefit, and unless I want to micromanage my specialists in every city, the science focus in my cities will favor specialists over tiles. By the time I finish the right side, I can usually get to the Industrial Era and pick Freedom. At this point, there are enough GS to drown out the GM points, and the half food per specialist stacks nicely with the +2 science (and later +1 production from SoL). I guess you can call it well thought out laziness on my part ;)

- Did you use your UU?
Normally I'm a peaceful player but after this scenario, wow Khans and Keshiks are great. The Hit and Run tactics are amazing.
- How useful was your UA?
- Did you use spying to your advantage?
No
- Did the map type help or hinder victory and how?
Map size hindered it a little.
- How did the difficulty level affect your game decisions?
Hardly, AI does not spam units on this difficulty. This made it easy, once the keshik train got rolling.
- Was Faith helpful to achieve victory? How?
No, I got fourth religion, and it was not a high priority.
- What Social Policies did you choose and in what order?
Tradition and then Honor
- What was your VC
Domination
- What techs did you prioritize ?
Went for a quick National College, teched to Keshiks and Astronomy.

I dominated the world by turn 248.

The main mistakes were that I didn't plan ahead for how I was going to reach the other continent, how powerful the Keshiks are, and how much dumber King AI is.

Keeping only the capitals, I completely massacred everyone on my continent around turn 170, spent 10 turns or so waiting for Astronomy, and many more turns getting my Keshiks to Attila's Court. Once my land army is there, I took Attila's Court and Warsaw fairly quickly (both were ~24 defense).

Constantinople was far away and fortified (Great Wall and ~48 defense), so I spent more turns waiting for my Frigates to arrive. The only port I had was Moscow which I conquered at turn 170ish, so building a sizable navy also took some time. At the end, I sieged Constantinople quickly with 6 Frigates and 8 Keshiks.

It was my first time playing as Mongolia. AIs were completely defenseless against Keshiks' hit & run and King AIs were so much behind in technology. Next time I probably would conduct simultaneous assaults with smaller armies for a quicker win.

I also worried too much about embarking my land units without naval units to defend them. Since everyone was so behind in technology (the Barbarians are still spamming galleys), my embarked units should be completely safe and alone in ocean tiles.

Domination victory, 312 turns

I feel like I learned more in this game than I have in a long while. Focus was entirely on food even though it felt painful not to build infrastructure, and my science path started with ranged units so I could attack the neighbours.

The result really was a faster start. My policy path was the same as usual, pretty much what Mesix describes—a mix of Honor and Liberty; so the only difference was growth, plus conquest before AI defense has a chance to get established.

The main delay was after I'd conquered Greece and Arabia. I decided to attack Russia before Sweden. Even though I'd left defense in my cities Sweden attacked me, plundered three caravans (creating serious money problems) and killed a highly promoted chariot archer. I was able to return and destroy the Swedish army but it took travel time. I didn't realize the AI will attack if the defense is less than what the AI would choose itself.

By the end I'd slipped behind the wave. Keshiks were too weak. I had to build artillery to defeat Poland.

Good fun game being a Mogul hourd.

- Did you use your UU?

Most definitely, bee-lined Chivalry for those evil Keshiks backed up by several Khans.

At the end had +1 range and x2 attack promotions on half-a-dozen units :)

- How useful was your UA?

The bonus vs CS wasn't really any use having decided to aim for a domination victory.

- Did you use spying to your advantage?

Not really, placed the only one I got in my capital.

- Did the map type help or hinder victory and how?

The larger empty spaces meant there was a lot of barbs to deal with with caused a few problems early on and meant scouting was a bit trickier. On the other hand they provided plenty of XP for my units.

- How did the difficulty level affect your game decisions?

Was fairly sure that the other civs wouldn't build much military so we could focus on being aggressive.

- Was Faith helpful to achieve victory? How?

Not really, got a religion but more by default than intention. By the time it turned up all the nice happiness buildings were gone anyway.

- What Social Policies did you choose and in what order?

Left-side Liberty then Honour (left then right) and then Commerce.

- What was your VC

Decided on domination as soon as it was clear that there were several civs on the same landmass.

- What techs did you prioritize ?

Road for Chariot Archers, Chivalry to upgrade them to Keshiks, then bee-lined Astronomy to swim over to the other 3 civs.

In retrospect should perhaps have sneaked in Philosophy so we could get NC much earlier than I did - it was a bit of a slog to get Astronomy to take on the 'other' side of the contintent (though it turned out it could be reached by a coastal route).

Just submitted my victory, Science in 2004 (though I was somewhat close to Diplo--in an election cycle or two I would have been there because I was gaining ground on Sweden fast with City States). I know this isn't a hugely successful performance compared to others, but I had fun. I also was out of my comfort level on King but still won, so I think Emperor will become my new default difficulty level.

- Did you use your UU?

Yes! War against Alexander when he settled in land that was rightfully mine. I found it quite intriguing that we were surrounded by mountains, so when I took over the Greek cities, I had 3 choke points to guard between Sweden and I. Sweden ended up being the main military foe that I had, and I used my first 3 Great Generals to establish well-placed military fortresses at each choke point. It was a great use of those fortresses! This allowed me to fight several defensive wars later in the game as Sweden kept attacking me.

- How useful was your UA?

I never used the bonus versus City States. Initially, I was going to do a Diplo victory. I decided against that late on, since Sweden was still ticking strong (though I was gaining ground) so Science victory would be a bit faster.

The +1 movement for mounted units was immensely helpful, though! Fighting wars was great as the Mongols. I used it against the Greeks and the Swedes throughout most of the game...that is, until I was able to nuke one of the Swedish cities to bring a war to a close. :)

- Did you use spying to your advantage?

Yes, but only near the end to reduce Swedish hold on city states. I should have been doing that earlier, probably could have gotten the diplo victory I wanted initially.

- Did the map type help or hinder victory and how?

Map type certainly helped! After conquering all of Greece except one city outside the ring of mountains, I only shared the inside ring of mountains (plus coast on two sides) with a couple of City States. This led to a quite defensible position, particularly after I used Great Generals to build the citadels at choke points! I even held my own when Sweden had its awesome UU and I was about equal in tech at that point (if not a bit behind--and certainly behind in upgrading my units due to gold issues).

- How did the difficulty level affect your game decisions?

I knew defenses would be quite important in the game, although I was surprised at how aggressive Sweden ended up being in my game. I expected more aggression from Catherine, but used Diplo and strength to explicitly try to ward that off. Sweden was a real jerk though, starting after my conquest of Greece. The Huns also hated me from when I met them, but they never could do much about it. Theodora and Cassimir both really liked me most of the game, except at the end when they decided they hated Russia. I worked hard to befriend Russia so I didn't get a 2-pronged invasion force and I knew working with Sweden was out of the question; it worked through to the end of the game.

- Was Faith helpful to achieve victory? How?

Not as useful directly as I expected; a lot of religions were founded on my continent before I founded mine! However, at about 2/3 of the way through, buying Great Scientists with faith was quite useful! I got a few that way, as well as Pagodas and Mosques.

- What Social Policies did you choose and in what order?

Liberty, then Patronage, then Rationalism, then Freedom until I was forced to switch (due to -45 unhappiness demanding a change!), then Order. I completed each track before beginning the next.

- What was your VC

Originally planned on Diplo for the irony, but found out later that Sweden was a gold-hoarder in the middle game and I thought I was losing ground fast; switched to Science. Toward the endgame I found that I was gaining ground on Sweden fast for Diplo victory though, so I probably could have still done it...but at that point, science was faster, so I went with science victory.

- What techs did you prioritize ?

I didn't prioritize much until I could make a reasonable run at Keshiks. Then, I went military techs for awhile to get Alex and fend off the Swedes (multiple times). I also got Astronomy early and sailed around the world to find other City States. Most of the game I was on par (or only slightly ahead) in tech, but by about the Industrial age, I really pulled away, entering the Info age as some other competitive civs were just entering the Atomic age. By the victory date, I had researched almost all techs.

Almost finished my first game in nearly 2 years. No submission, but we will get to that.

Ignored religion and culture completely, though I ended up getting a fair bit of both from conquests.

The first hundred turns were an unfocused mess. Soon, Alexander came calling and I lost my second city. Things looked grim for a time, but I rallied to capture Athens and Moscow, and eliminated Sweden altogether.

By turn 417 I had five capitals in pocket, and was ready to soften up Attila's Court with a nuke to finish the game off. The other capital, Warsaw, had fallen to Attila long ago.

I nuke and then capture the Hun's capital and wait for my victory screen, which sadly doesn't appear. :( Apparently updating the in-game help hasn't been high priority for Firaxis.

I could have pushed I guess, another 15-20 turns should be enough, but given how long the game had already lasted, I decided to call it there.

Initially planned to go for the culture victory, when I saw all the wine around me. So started liberty and shrine. But got only the third panteon and was beaten to founding the first religion by Arabs, who took monasteries for their religion.

So I decided to destroy everyone in revenge. But I made several mistakes like not switching from Oracle to National College and finishing it only on T88. So I got chivalry on on T124. By that time I had 5 chariot archers and 2 horsemen ready and enogh gold for upgrades. Used faith to buy some units.

Then it was Greece, then Sweden (who took Mecca in the meantime). Got some fresh horses to buy more keshiks, who targeted Russia.

Reached Astronomy at T164, but did not have any coastal city, so I sent workers to explore the oceans. Wanted to open exploration for the ship movement bonus, but realized in the end I never did this. Could have saved some more turns. Took Stockholm on T169 and Moscow on T175. Moscow was tough, as Great wall was there. But I managed to take a small city nearby, build a citadel to grab land around Moscow, which allowed my Keshiks to destroy the city.

One army sailed West, one East. The East army rached Byzantium and one Keshik found some rifles in a native hut :crazyeye: The cavalry was much better at capturing cities at T180 than the horsemen. The east army got Constantinople, the West one got Warsaw and they both met at Atillas court. He got Quite an army, so I bribed him to attack Byzantium. After he boarder part of his army, it was wiped out by my keshiks.

Keshiks with khans dominated the world in about 77 turns. I build a lot of them and bought some with faith and gold. Got some decent Money from the city states along the way, but never fought them. The UA was used only for the movement bonus.

I took full liberty, piety 2 (decision from the early culture strategy). Then left side honor and commerce opener. Thought I have opened exploration for the movement bonus on ships, but actually I never did that.
