My first submission to GotM. I`m a filthy casual then it comes to Civ 5 and that`s why I had such a poor timing.
- How many cities did you build and how many did you decide to acquire?
I built 3 cities in addition to capital. I captured all cities on my continent, but razed all but capitals. Capitals of Egipt, Spain and England were anexed by me. I think, I should`ve only anexed Thebes, and puppet all others, as I had no trouble with happiness this game. I also shouldn`t have built two extra cities in west.
- How did you use religion or spying to your advantage?
I used religion as much as possible to my advantage this game. I tried to combine Religious Art, with spreading religion with World Church and missionaries, to get some culture bonus. In the final turn, bonus was equal to +53. I`m not sure if it was worth the trouble. I also picked traits Religious Texts and Religious Idols to get extra culture from Hermitage and silver. Late game I used faith to buy three Great Merchants to get Influence from City States and gold.
I stole two technologies from Hiawatha and 1 spy died acquiring third. Other than that, I rigged some elections in City States I wanted to ally with.
- How did diplomacy go with your neighbors?
AI was very aggressive, especially Spain and Iroquis. Early game they conquered America and England. Later me and Spain shared cities of Egypt, but in the end I had to conquer Spain too, because they kept attacking City States allied with me. Later, Iroquis conquered Carthage and attacked Arabia few times but did failed to overcome them. After I secured my continent, game was rather peaceful for me except for few failed naval attacks from Iroquis.
I allied with as many City States as I could. I tried to fulfill their missions, bribed them and rigged elections. I did it to get bonuses to culture, faith and happiness. I think I could`ve rushed for Diplomatic Victory and win much earlier thanks to that.
- Were your UUs helpful for a Cultural Victory?
Other than being better units than what they replaced, I didnt notice anything exceptional.
- Did you build any of the Wonders of the Ancient World and if so, were they useful?
I tried to build all Wonders giving bonus to faith and culture. When I saw an opportunity, I also built few other. I tried to spread then across cities to utilize Reformation policy.
- Other comments
My policy path: Tradition -> Piety -> Patronage -> Freedom -> Commerce
I had as many Artist specialists as possible. In few cities I also invested in others to get bonus to science, money, and generate Great People.
Late game I fell way behind Hiawatha in research. In fact, in last turn he was one spaceship part short of victory. I nuked his capital in act of desperation to slow him, but I don`t think it was necessary.
Very fun game indeed.
