Another by election because of tory graft

Rishi Sunak is braced for another byelection after former Tory MP Scott Benton was suspended from the Commons for 35 days over his role in a lobbying sting.

MPs approved the suspension of the Blackpool South MP on Tuesday evening without the need for a vote.

The length of the suspension means that Benton is now facing a recall petition. If 10% of his constituents sign it, a byelection will be triggered in his seat.

Benton, 36, had the Tory whip removed in April 2023 after suggesting to undercover reporters at the Times that he would be willing to break lobbying rules for money.

Benton had offered to lobby ministers on behalf of the gambling industry and leak a confidential policy document for up to £4,000 a month.

A subsequent investigation by parliament's standards committee found he had committed a "very serious breach" of the rules and recommended a 35-day suspension from the Commons.

Benton denied wrongdoing and appealed against the suspension to the independent expert panel (IEP), the body that sits above the standards committee.

He appealed on the grounds that the procedure was flawed, claiming the decision was leaked by the committee. But last week, he lost his appeal against the suspension.

For those who have economist access (I believe if you register you can get a few articles for free per month).

For those who don’t, one of the points the article makes is that theft is already an offence with sentences of up to 7 years in prison. So having a specific law, whatever your position, is completely pointless.

These are all good reasons for an individual to get their pet chipped. I do not see they are good reasons for the law to require it.

There should of course be a vote on it.

With the requirement that those voting in favour should lead by example, first getting themselves micro-chipped.

Does microchipping pets serve any other purpose, though?

Been looking into this.

A leading driver seems to have been the EU trying to slow the spread of rabies on the continent via dogs.

That is in itself quite underestandable.

Well if the EU wants to insist that all immigrating cats are micro chipped it needs a cat proof wall.

Hello Donald !

"democracy is good, except when it does stuff I don't like, then it's bad"

(the joke is we all think like this, but it's fun to see you on this side of that fence)

Maybe we should socialise pet healthcare, that way poor people can afford such things? I don't hold out much hope though, the current government has been increasingly privatising human healthcare, and I don't see the current Labour crop doing anything to reverse that either.
Many vets in the UK do offer free care or reduced fees for those on means tested benefits.

Do you have any evidence for this, or even a link?
In my own city we're getting a brazen attempt to steal a dog or cat every couple of days. (It used to be just dogs, but there is a known culprit who is particularly seeking out cats. Police aren't interested.)
It even has it's own "National Awareness Day" in about two weeks.

Spoiler potential epilepsy trigger? :

Yes, thousands of dogs in the uk are stolen each year to be used as bait for the underground dog fighting circuit. Cats too.

The first has no numbers, it is only the first line of the article that mentions bait dogs at all. The second says "2,160 dogs reported as stolen across 2022". Unless all of them are bait dogs it cannot be thousands.

The first "references" the League Against Cruel Sports, and a google for that and bait gives a couple of pages with no evidence or numbers.

Liz Truss’ latest big idea to save Britain is to rope in Nigel Farage.
Her ideas usually go so well, I am sure this will too.

This may come as a surprise to you, but the BBC has no control over NHS funding.
