There are 7 playable civilizations, 2 non-playable major civilizations, and 6 non-playable minor civilizations. Each of the starting positions is designed in a way that is not necessarily traditionally balanced but encourages replayability and roleplaying. When I made the map I intended for each of the playable factions to be focused on achieving specific goals:

Arendel Phaedra's Summer Court:
- Conquer the Holy Country
- Either defeat or make Faeryl Viconia your vassal

Amelanchier's Thicket Watch:
- Defend Umbrawood border from orcish incursions
- Secure strategic metals for yourself and your Ljosalfar allies
- Optionally do not conquer and cities outside of Umbrawood

Thessa's Dendrom:
- Make the city of Dendrom into a center of science and magic
- Protect Umbrawood from the witch cults in the East

Faeryl Viconia's Winter Court
- Liberate Esus' holy city from the Countess
- Destroy the Summer Court
- Either eliminate or make all the major elven factions your vassals

Falamar's Paradera:
-Secure trading posts along the Umbrawood coast
-Defeat Acheron and capture his horde

Gosea's Heralds of the Apocalypse:
- Capture all the mana sources in Witchwood (the eastern half of the map)
- Summon the Infernals and turn the elven forests into a wasteland

Hafgan the Purger's Burning Horde
- Unite the Orcish and Goblin factions by force
- Raze the three ancient elven capitals (Evermore, Yonna, and Thariss)
