Upgrade problem

I have iron working, iron, warriors, and about 100 gold.

I can't upgrade them to swordsmen either via u, shift-u, inside of cities or out of them.

What's the deal? Do I need more gold? Do I need to be in a barracks? Do I have to have Leonardo (I though that just made it cheaper).

Are you doing it in a city with a barracks? According to the manual, you can only upgrade units in cities with a barracks that have access to all of the resources the upgraded unit needs.

Wash my mouth out with soap, but I like the prima strategy guide better than the manual. It's easier to navigate (although it is lighter on some of the fine details).
