What is now the ''right'' (for you) amount of cities ?

I'm surprised so many people stay at 3-5 cities.

I want presence to be visible on the world map, that means I usually go for 8-10 cities on standard size. Managing only a few cities gets boring, and whenever I used to do it for cultural victories I felt like I was hiding from the world in my corner. Get involved, spam cities!

I've noticed that I expand more in BNW. The policy cost was always a huge deterrent for me in G&K. I usually like to build as many cities as possible. I do agree with an above poster that micromanaging a lot of cities can get cumbersome. I usually puppet stuff just so I won't have to tell them what to build. I wish there were a way to automate city builds for non-puppet cities.

3 ~ 4 for classic era opener, for ancient I try to gobble up a capitol or 2 with spearmen/composite bow war. After that it's really map dependent.
