whoops - the AI built the UN

Hi, I'm a newcomer to Civ3, and finally got a decent game going (for a while I just got frustrated by the time Industrial rolled around, this time I was behind at first, but then became the strongest civ around). Standard map, Regent difficulty, 7 other civs, pangea. I'm playing as Egypt. Victory conditions are diplomatic, domination, or conquest.

Here's the problem. I was confident in my standing both militarily and diplomatically earlier, but I didn't get how diplomatic victories worked. I let the AI (China) build the UN, and now, 130 years after it was built (it came up in 1850 or so, its now 1980), there still hasn't been a vote. They know they'll lose - Germany, England, and the Aztecs are gone, England in the BC era, Germany to me at the close of Industrial, and Aztecs to Russia, France, and Persia half way through modern. Persia, and China are gracious towards me. Russia and France are polite. I saved and tried to make a quick blitzkrieg military victory. Not going to work, there're too many MPP's going around, and I will have to build up for a very long time to kill of a single civ. If I want to whack the city containing the UN, I'm going to have to mow through about 7-8 others to get to it, and China is the strongest military power (not including my ICBMs). I'll be satisfied with a diplomatic victory, but how do I get China to hold a vote?

Can you force a vote even if you have built it, or do you have to wait for it to come up?

The whole point of building the UN is that you control the voting. You get the chance to hold a vote every few turns.

of_the_warrior, Firstly, I'd encourage you to try to learn to play without reloading (although it's ok when you want to learn new things or experiment with how the games work).

Anyhow, it sounds like you have no chance of getting a domination or conquest victory in the time left. So, you have a couple of choices:

- try to capture the UN off China, which is also apparently an intractable option.
- wait until the game ends when the turns run out. If you have the most points historically, you'll win a histographic victory.

Since the first option also sounds infeasible, you're just left with the latter.

Taking the UN city *might* be possible. How many neighbors does China have? Are any of them even remotely powerful militarily? If so, and if you have any cash or techs to bribe, you could try to get a massive dogpile on China. While they're distracted - nobody fights well in a multi-front war - you prepare a strategic strike.

Mobilize immediately - you get faster production of military units and improvements. Do you have the Military Academy? If so, build armies, and put in your best defenders. The AI almost never attacks armies. (If not, you'll need a ton more defenders and artillery to be ready to go - maybe too many.) Then build as many as you can manage of attack units and artillery (very important! - and do radar artillery move 2? that'd be a big help), and as many transports and escorts as you need to move them all. Land with everything you have as close to the UN city as possible. Advance everything together to the UN - don't attack any other cities. Whn you conquer the city, use any leftover artillery or unit moves to pillage the rails and roads around the city as far out as you can manage. (You want to slow down the counterattack - modern armor attacking with only one shot at you are far less scary than when attacking with two.) You only need to hold the city one turn to hold the vote.

Anyway, that's how I'd (try to) do it. More fun than going for histograph. :p

No, you can't force a vote. One will be held when you first build the UN, then every 20 turns after that.

maybe land some troops behing their lines just near the UN city take it and raze it and no more UN and you can go for another victory or take it a ask for a vote. If this is dangerous because of other powers then maybe you can use mobilize and draft to there best and maybe then you can win.

If you do this, you will have to bribe the AI like there is no tomorrow to win a vote, since they will seriously dislike you. Unless you can get them to declare war of course.

it is every 11 turns that a vote will be offered to the owner.
Time for an update to the FAQ, Lt. I thought it was 10(11) turns but checked the FAQ before I replied. From the FAQ...

"Diplomacy and Trade Questions

How do I call a UN vote?

Not. There will be a vote (unless you decide not to have one) when you build the UN, then you will be asked again after a certain number of turns (20 I think)."

Now there's an interesting question. :D

no he would still have to become an member and i don't know how u do that.:crazyeye:

Get rop from other civs, declare war on china, sighn military alliance with all civs, and take the city.(Don't attack until you sign militarly alliances firs!)

If you take the UN with alliances/AI civs also fighting China, if at all possible have the vote take place while STILL at war. According to Bamspeedy's AI Attitude article, being at war with a common enemy improves attitude, but after the war it will go back (or worse, if you did any razing).

I agree with taking the city with the UN and forcing a vote is your best option.

This is what I personally would do:

- Start producing Modern Armor and prepare for war. I usually over power my enemy with more units.

- Sign MPPs with the dominant civs and especially with China's neighbors. More allies the better.

- Start pissing off Mao/China by making demands of tech and/or gold. Once he is furious, try to plant a spy. Hopefully, the attempt will fail and China will declare war.

- If not, declare war against China.

- Sign military alliances against China.

- If China has MPP with the same civs as you, get China to attack you inside your border. This will activate your MPPs and invalidate China's .

- Egypt is religious and you can switch to Communism in one turn.

- Mobilize your economy and crank out military units.

- Go after the Chinese city with the UN (press F7 key on the keyboard to find out which city has the UN).

- If you're sure you'll be able to take the city, start preparing for a vote. Give gifts/gold to your allies for a couple of turns to make sure they vote for you.

- Call a vote and hopefully win the election.

Note: I'm not an expert and the above is what I would do in your situation. Good luck. :egypt:

id stay in democracy/republic untill war weariness gets bad. Then if I had a few cities, Id go communism, or if I had a lot of cities, then monarchy.

I never let the AI get the UN cause they NEVER call a ^%^* vote!
:aargh:

Take UN from China! (What if someone else starts some war and China signs up MPP, ROP, MA and then calls for a vote?)
Be sure not to scale down their empire too much, as they should be your opponent when you hold the vote (otherwise another candidate shows up and ...imagine).

Which 2 civs get nominated? Is it the 2 with the highest scores, or the 2 who currently have the biggest population? I may end up having to get a vote in my game, but I'd hate to have a vote and not be nominated. I was pretty weak for most of the game. At least 3 civs or even 4 civs are ahead of me in score, but I recently took out a whole continent and most of the remaining civs seem to like me. India is rushing the spaceship though and may beat me to it, so I might have to risk a vote.

billindenver, the 2 with the highest scores almost always have the highest pop (score = territory + population)

But you get to be on the ballot if you build the UN.
