XCOM 2

Legendary is super hard compared to commando. Think about how you deal with an Andromedon. Now imagine dealing with 1 Andromedon and 3 Archons with mag weapons, not plasma. And they have 4-5 more health to boot.
by the time you meet andromedons you should have 2 psi soldiers which trivializes the game. i played both commander and legendary and in the later stages of the game the differences in difficulty are barely noticeable. only the first missions, especially the starting mission are insanely hard on legendary.

edit:
regarding the dlc it looks more like a good mod than a proper expansion. i will probably skip it.

Personally I don't agree with this. This is only possible if you ignore either armour or mag weapons. Neither of which is a viable strategy. It also takes at least a month for psi ops to become useful. The difficulty spike in xcom basically goes like this:

Very hard - at the start
Hard - when you have 1 squad promotion and don't need rookies
Medium - when you have armour and mag weapons
Hard - when archons and and andommedons show up when you have mag weapons
Hard - when you have basic plasma weapons and basic psi ops
Medium/easy - when you are fully Kityed out

To be fair this isn't much different to classic. But the start is much harder. Psi ops need at least 2 abilities to be viable. Otherwise the other classes will boss them.

On ruler aliens though i think this is a good move, and a sort of evolution on what long war managed to achieve. Ill never forget the thrill of doom when i came across this:

Spoiler :

The XCOM2 website has more info on the Berserker Queen:
The Berserker Queen’s move set includes:
- Quake, an area-of-effect attack that can disorient, stun and/or disable targets
- Faithbreaker, a mass panic attack where any wounded target caugh within must make a panic check
- Huge amount of health that will take multiple engagements to deplete
- Will summon a portal to flee battle after devastating your soldiers or being chased off
- Stalks your soldiers across multiple missions
- Rulers take a turn after every solder action

The last one seems a bit OP to me.

Jake Solomon just tweeted this: "The Icarus Suit. Vault up to high ground without a ladder, and fly to any location your squad can see. Free action."

That sounds fantastic! It looks like these new armors you get from the ruler aliens will be super good.

I believe they take the place of an entire pod so it isn't as OP as you think. Just requires a different strategy than a normal pod.

I guess when I think about it that way, it makes sense. Instead of dealing with a pod of aliens all taking their actions at once at the end of the turn, you have to deal with only alien that takes multiple actions in the same turn. Plus, I read that the ruler aliens will escape if you do too much damage. So, it sounds like they might do more hit and run style attacks. I envision it like this: the ruler alien comes in, you damage it, they move again and strike one of your soldiers, you damage it again, they move again and damage one of your soldiers, you damage it again, then it escapes through the portal. So, it comes in, damages your squad and then leaves.

Now it is simply a case of using high damage weapons and/or repeaters to ensure a kill. Repeaters could really ruin them. They better make them immune. Maybe this might be an opportunity to make deadeye useful. So it can kill or force a ruler to stay in situ.

Well my first encounter with one didnt end too well .

As there are plot points, ill spoiler it. I really like the story elements:

Spoiler :
Started up a legendary ironman game with the new DLC, and it seems Vhalen has been a busy lady. She was studying vipers and one of them got a bit out of control - the viper king. It sort of builds on Vhalen as the unethical scientist she was like in the first one. So the first you meet is the viper king. And it is a real mean cuss. Taking an action after all your actions can really ruin you. Especially as you are reloading and shooting. You also cannot destroy its cover, as if you do then it just moves somewhere else. And it spawned about 12 neonate vipers (like half baked vipers with 2 hp). The king knocked out central officer bradford (yes you get to use him in place of one of your soldiers. He is a colonel who has advanced down the bladestorm tree,w hich is actually quite useful in this mission. Its the first time i have ever found a real use for reaper).

Fortunately if Bradford dies then you can restart. Might have to think a bit more carefully next time i try.

Just finished my legend playthrough with the ruler aliens. The rulers alter combat in a few subtle ways. Tactically, i would say the following:

- When you know you have a chance of meeting a ruler, make sure you are prepared. Always have the frost bomb on you as well. Those few free turns it gives you are a god send, particularly on the viper king, which i found to be the most challenging.

- Try to have at least one DPS weapon like an acid bomb and use it early.

- goes without saying, but ignore all other enemies until you have either killed or forced the ruler to flee.

- Repeaters FTW. Yes they do work on rulers.

- Some damage is better than no damage. Damage interrupts some of the rulers special moves, so make sure you have a decent stock handy on your team.

- Personally i put the serpent suit on first my sniper, and then later my combat hacker. It is debatable whether the serpent suit is still viable by the time

- The rage suit is best for your rangers by a mile.

- The Icarus suit is best on your snipers.

- As for the weapons, they are pretty obvious apart from the bolt gun. Early game i put the bolt gun on one of my specialists. Late game I put it my psi operative. This is because guardian offers chain over watch shots, so with one ammo, that perk is wasted.

Then on a strategic layer, because of the new items and suits. You really need to focus on resources. Elerium is like gold dust, and is well worth the investment in the black market when available. Powered Armour is no longer crucial. By that time you should have the three special suits and with EXO and WAR suits warden armour is less pressing.

Finally, and this applies to legend only, it is worth paying more attention to the Avatar project than normal. They have cut the number of days you get when the bar completes. It might also have something to do with how many times the doom clock triggers. I almost lost in the midgame because of this. By the end i was getting 7 days to burn a facility or die (pre dlc you got like 20 days or something). And if you dont have one unlocked then thats basically gameover.

Thats me done on XCOM2 now. I think ill wait until an expansion comes out before i pick it up again. The DLC was nice, but it wasnt worth another legend campaign, which is a major investment of time.

Just in time for the steam sale. You can get the season pass for fourteen bucks through the Fourth versus ten for just Shens Gift.

Just completed a portion of the new dlc. End of the mission, the crew is in the sky ranger. And it crashes. Argh!

The long war team is releasing several mods. A perk and laser pack have been released and an aliens one will be dropped soon.

There was a tentative article in PC gamer that the leader of long war studios gave hint about a long war 2 mod for x com 2. But there appears to be some collaboration between them and Firaxis, and they are keeping things closely under wraps. Time will tell i guess. Hopefully there will be a full expansion before xmas. If not, then early new year.

So i just downloaded a huge slew of mods, including the new ones from Long war studios, and i have to say its almost like a different game and similar to long war. So if people were thinking of diving back in, then now is probbaly a good time to do it if you install lots of mods. I particularly like the new classes:

Ranger
Assault
Shinobi
Gunner
Grenadier
Specialist
Sharpshooter

And each of these is sub divided into 3 different paths. It adds a huge amount of variety. The new enemies are also interesting with lots of Advent variants and much improved AI.

The game is harder as a result. So watch out for that. Im having to play on commander as legend was a bit too challenging.
