Vote on your most and least favourite units of the Ancient and Classical eras included in Civ5. Elaborate on why(it's your fave) and how perhaps on how you'd like the (disliked) unit altered.

Sorry, instead of most and least favourite unit of antiquity at the top of the poll I'd only written the most favorite. Please include one(or more) of each- favourites and non favorites as this poll allows multiple answers and explain your vote-if you care to.

Woo Hoo I'm first! Pathfinder is my fav; a scout with more combat strength and the ability to select specific goodies from ruins. And a ruin upgrade yields a composite bowman. Least fav is the quinquereme; what use is a slightly stronger trireme?

I've gotta second the Pathfinder as my favorite early unit, for all the reasons listed above. Warrior-strength scout that upgrades to a Comp Bow? Yes please. The fact you can choose your ruin reward is just icing on the cake.

As for a least favorite... can't say I have one, but I've never given it a lot of thought.

Pathfinder for sure.

- Warrior strength with scout speed
- Start with one instead of a normal warrior
- Choose ruin rewards

maori warrior.. It takes so long for them to get upgraded and there isn't always any iron around. The bonus is a complete waste by the time you get to the latter eras and you also have to pay money to keep the terrify bonus.

I understand the love for the pathfinder and also enjoy it; although, I find the Pictish Warrior to be my favorite with the Aztec Jaguar a close second. Echo the least favorite being the Quinquereme. I usually play with ruins turned off so that should explain why the pathfinder is not at the top of my list.

Jaguar Warrior. The Aztecs are one of my favourite Civs to use, and the Jaguar is one of the (very fun) cogs that makes it work. Jungles are nothing when the Jaguar is around, and they are incredibly effective at farming barbarians.

Slinger has to be my least favourite. There's just... nothing even remotely fun or useful about them.

Jaguar for sure. Having Infantry that self-heal on a kill lets you start them up the promotion train instead of being more or less cannon fodder. Forest & Jungle movement speed AND combat bonus is also great. Stack up some rough terrain bonuses and stick to the trees. Weaken units with ranged, finish with Jaguar = pretty well promoted Jaguars.

I've had squads of former jaguars that got Cover 1 & 2, Medic 1 & 2, Drill 3, Blitz, and March. Those guys simply would not die.

Pathfinder too good. Get ruins, have The Perfect Start.

Slingers just aren't as exciting as people who sling stones at lethal speeds should be.

I haven't used every UU yet (haven't used the Kris Swordsman, which seems very interesting).

My favorite ancient unit is the Battering Ram. The amount of damage it does to cities is insane, it just feels so great rushing people with it; including in multiplayer. Not to mention that they stay relevant for a long time.

My least favorite is probably the Hoplite. I usually do not go to tech for Spearmen baring niche situations or times when I am intentionally doing something different just cause. The hoplite doesn't give you anything interesting, just a stronger version of the spearmen, who aren't all that great.

I'm going to go on record as saying the Pathfinder is just a smidge overrated. Ultimately, all it is is a scout that you can guarantee won't get crappy results from goody huts. The "you can choose your bonus" is misleading, as you can't choose the same outcomes every time. It's not like you can always pick the tech or always pick the pop boost.

So...it's good, but there are other fish in the sea.

I cast that sad, solitary vote for the companion cavalry.

I suppose it's still my favorite (even though I just realized I didn't build them in my current game at all) because of the warm glow left over from Civ V vanilla, when they were so awesome, they were game-breaking.

They may have been nerfed years ago, but they are still wicked fast and they spawn GGs like nobody's business. They'll always have a special place in my heart.

The Pathfinder is certainly a powerful unit. Perhaps it is too powerful, since it can quickly throw a game early on. However, I don't think the Pathfinder is nearly as fun to play as the Jaguar. Jags are also OP, but aren't as likely to throw the game at the outset. So the Jaguar has my vote for favorite unit.

As for least favorite unit, I really can't say. I am not a fan of early war, so can't evaluate units which play to that approach.

I don't see much misleading about it: Pathfinders show you what bonuses you can get and let you pick one. I'm almost positive there's some sort of cooldown or minimum turn count for bonuses even if you pop ruins and get them random, so I find it hard to call it a minus on the Pathfinder that they don't let me get around that. That would make them absolutely game-shattering instead of merely insanely powerful.

They are handy, no doubt. If you play your cards right (and get fairly lucky) then you can even snag the GL on Deity with the Shoshone.

So all I'm saying is that "insanely" powerful is a bit of overstatement. Of course, I'm also thinking of games I've played with max players, so maybe there are more ruins up for grabs in average games.
