The first of 12 films in which Johnny Weissmuller played the iconic jungle hero, and the first in which his 'Tarzan yell' is heard. With Maureen O'Sullivan as an engaging and vivacious Jane, and featuring Neil Hamilton - best known for his role thirty-five years later as Commissioner Gordon on the 1966 Batman TV Show - as adventurer Harry Holt. Filmed at the Botanical Garden of Hamma in Algiers, Algeria, and at the then-undeveloped Toluca Lake region north of Los Angeles, the film also contains footage shot the previous year in Africa for the movie Trader Horn (1931), which is added in, sometimes using unconvincing rear-projection while the cast acts in the foreground. This is a pre-code movie, so some of the action is sexier than you might remember, with O'Sullivan's Jane executing an elaborate strip-tease as she transitions into being Tarzan's mate, clad finally in only leather halter and loincloth by the end of the film.
