Deleting the prior versions from my mods folder and deleting the cache folder fixed it for me. :)

I get this too. I tried different civs and a couple different map types and it always starts with a defeat message, no units or cities, etc.

Since the barbarians have been upgraded, I've tried to play three different times and I just give up. The "balancing" went way too far in the favor of barbarians. I don't know how many times I've had a spearman (with open fields promotion) attack a barbarian axeman (or whatever you call them...
