Another thing to try is to make a multiplayer hybrid game on your LAN with only one human player and the rest AI's. All the AI's go simultaneously unless there's war.
I like both, but I enjoy the elements that give Civ 4 more depth, such as random events. I agree with the above statement about the tech tree; it always seems like in Civ 5 you have to stick to an exact progression of techs.
I got all this influence from killing barbs, returning workers, and wiping out a barb camp...with just a spearman! The camp was in the jungle to the left of the minimap.
Iron can come in stacks of 2 or 6. Horses and Uranium come in stacks of 2 or 4. Coal comes in 3 or 7. Aluminum comes in 3 or 8. Lastly, Oil comes in 3 or 7, and 4 when it's in the water.

I don't think it's determined by city focus; I haven't noticed a difference after switching focus.
If you lose the capital, the second city becomes the capital.
