This is interesting because I agree with you that Carthage can be pretty strong, but I think its the UU and the UI that makes/breaks them, I think their trait combos are solid but seafarer is very swingy. Financial's bonus is worse later in the game but at the start, you get 4 commerce tiles on...

For anyone with mp experience, we've been having problems where one person's firewall prevents other players from joining. The way we avoided this was by making that person join last. Now I recently bought a new laptop and have been getting the same issue, does anyone know why?

In vanilla civ4 people often don't attack during the medieval era because of how powerful longbowmen are, and in RI its no different. However, there are more work arounds in RI which make medieval warfare not only possible, but lucrative too; Conqueror trait with traditional customs, a barracks...

It should scale with time, on the slowest speed your units will have much more longevity even if you're late to build them, because production doesn't scale well with speed

You might be playing a civ that doesn't have crossbowmen, you should be able to recruit both if you have access to both
