So my case is also a bit strange. When everything is set to random I can start a new game on Giant Earth. However, when I select the civs and city states it crashes. https://pastebin.com/VP7J113D

Try the mod Real Strategy or AI+. Really helps the AI. In many games I was overwhelmed by the AI's armies. Real Strategy is the one I prefer but give both a try.

I miss state religion from CIV IV. This was the only version of Civilization that I thought made religion historically accurate. I keep hoping they will bring it back.

How about a mod to be able to play the 8 new civilizations with the base game. I loved the base game with various mods installed. I cannot stand the new loyalty addition in Rise and Fall. The AI loses cities within 20/25 turns. That makes the game unplayable.
