I had the same problem than you. On a huge map, I had to wait sometimes nearly 10 minutes between each turn, while my harddrive was working.
I greatly reduced this delay by :
-Setting swap file size to 1500/1500 (as you already did)
-Installing a small application to defragment my RAM ...
There is definitely an issue with GeForce 5200. Many people with a lower standard (32 MB graphic card) can run the game smoothly. I have a 64 MB 5200 on a quite recent desktop and the game is sloww as hell :sad:
Do you think it's more a hardware issue ?
I may have a chance to get a new graphic card this week-end. Maybe that'll do something.
Meanwhile I'm playing on my laptop... at 2-3 fps max after some tweaking :( (it seems that many users with gforce 5200 have the same bad perf)

Since the game is not running fast enough on my laptop (with my 1.6 GHz centrino, 512 RAM, and 64 MB geforce I get only one frame every 2-3 seconds :confused: ), I tried to install Civ 4 on my desktop computer.
It is a 2.4 GHz celeron, with 512 MB RAM, and an ATI Radeon 9200SE...
