Yep, I'm still playing :) I play FFH more than any other version of Civ. Have had long breaks at times, but I've recently picked it up again and am going back through all the scenarios. Haven't tried the modmods other than MNAI but may look into AoE once I'm done with scenarios.

Why are my city's borders expanding northwards when there are riverside tiles that would be far more valuable?

If we're being pedantic that's not necessarily a Pyrric victory because you didn't mention any losses. A Pyrric victory in Civ would be waging war on another player and wiping them out, but in the process losing all but one of your cities and units.
