If you are 70 turns away, and a lot of civs are cautious towards you, well... you're practically screwed. It usually takes 30-40 turns just to get the full diplomatic benefit from shared pacts, religions, or civics. And you need to be much higher than "Cautious" to get them to vote for you...
The 1000 AD is a very fun scenario, and the start conditions definitely encourage you to replicate some real-life historical events.
