[BTS] Crashmon Shadow Game 2 :- Emperor

Krikav makes a fair point, we haven't given much thought to barbs. Even on Emperor they can wreck your game if ignored. At this level we have time to get an axe or two out before barbs become an issue if we focus on it by settling the copper first ring next and switching to The Wheel. I only...

    Parthenon

Sums up my thoughts. Glad to see someone with some credibility around here standing up for the Parthenon :strength: As with most things Civ, it's situational; but being half-Philosophical for a good chunk of turns for the cost of 6 forests? I'll take that if I can.

[BTS] Crashmon Shadow Game 2 :- Emperor

Yeah, sampsa's right about the micro. I think it works correctly for the 7 turn warrior & growth if you work the pigs on the first turn after the worker and then switch to the corn. Not a huge deal, but deity players will tell you that marginal gains (especially early in the game) are important...

[BTS] Crashmon Shadow Game 2 :- Emperor

I'd go BW next. Timing should work well to be able to start chopping into the settler after farming the corn and mining the pigs. If we're going to settle at Asoka, I think I prefer the PH 3N2W to 3N1W, even if that does potentially miss a FP. We don't really have a genuinely good 2nd city site...

    Where would you settle?

I'd settle 2E 1N of the settler. Claims all the land on this little peninsula (including possible resource in fog 2N of settler) and reduces crappy ocean tiles in BFC; although I guess it takes an extra turn for the WBs to improve fish compared to 3E 1N... FIN coastal fish are the power tiles...

[BTS] Spain, early religion, stone, marble - how to play this start?

I'd probably quit and try and roll a better map :) If I was going to play this map, I'd load the 4000BC autosave and not waste time researching Polytheism. Spain has the worst possible starting techs and you have a food poor capital. Development here is going to be slow even with optimal play...

    Charlemagne Emperor Huge Marathon

Yep. Nothing screams excitement like repeatedly moving a scout and hitting the enter key for half an hour before you eventually pop a warrior out.

[BTS] Monarch Genghis Khan - My midgame is atrocious

You've played the early game pretty well. You say that mid-game tends to be your biggest problem...but on Monarch you can just click buttons and win easily from a strong start like this. You can even waste time building markets or REX sub-optimally and still win at a canter! Move up difficulty...

[BTS] Monarch Genghis Khan - My midgame is atrocious

I'm of the mind that REX heaven is having gems or gold in your capital to prop up rapid early expansion until you can develop a more sustainable economy. It's great to get cities up early with the associated snowballing benefits, but not if you crash your economy doing so. That's why I...

[BTS] Monarch Genghis Khan - My midgame is atrocious

Yep, improve the pigs first. As lymond noted, no need to delay the worker 2 turns when you've got the wheel - especially as the road on the pigs would save you an early worker turn by being able to move onto the cow and begin improving it on the same turn. Tech path is interesting. Do we need...

[BTS] Cannot survive the Industrial era at Emperor difficulty

Before I found this forum, I was happy to treat Civ4 as an empire-building sandbox game: generally developing in a "realistic" way that I found entertaining and morally acceptable. Eventually I got fed up at being unable to progress past Monarch, and took to the internet for assistance. It seems...

Is the Academy actually worth it before Renaissance/Industrial Era?

My context is this: If OP is bulbing his way to Military Tradition (via Lib, there ain't no other way), then he's going to have scientists twiddling their thumbs in his cities for a long time waiting for Education. Unless OP is generating his scientists very slowly. In which case going for a...

Is the Academy actually worth it before Renaissance/Industrial Era?

Eh? You're only getting full value (or close to it) from a Great Scientist by bulbing expensive technologies. If you're spunking off an early Scientist by bulbing Maths or Compass or whatever's available then I don't see how that will outperform an early Academy.

    [BTS] Willem-Shadow Game-Learning mode

    1) My first though is that this a great looking map, a premium start. Lots of lovely flood plains for our FIN cottages. Gold in sight. Two grain resources to manage the flood plain unhealthiness. 2) Economy management should be easy here: FIN flood plain cottages. 3) Pangaea maps are perfect for...
