I got it working - Thanks Gramphos for the help - i dont know what i did, but it decided to work. I think restating the machine before and after removal and instalation may have helped. Settings that required a reboot to take affect.
Have just downloaded the Atari 1.29 patch and I'm again getting the "please insert civilization disk into CD drive".
Has anyone actually got the patch for a uk version. I've now tried the one from this site, Atari and from Civ3.com
Any ideas ?

I'm even having problems with the latest 1.29f patch,
It seems that it wont read the disk sine i have the wrong version of Civ3 - Think ive got a uk version and the patch is for US version,
All im trying to do is play the world with everyone in the correct places.
I've read from so many of you in previous posts that this is a common problem, is it simply because the patch i downloaded from this site is for the US version and I have the UK version?
Have any patches "V 1.29" ever been written for the UK, it seems that a lot of other countries have this...
Ive just installed the V1.29 patch for civ 3;
Each time I try to start the game, using the Disk, an error message pops up saying that the compuer is unable to read the disk.
Has anyone ever encountered this before, if so does anyone know how to resolve this?

I tried this - using and modifying one of the cpf examples given,
Some of my civs are in the right place, some are just missing and during the 1st turn - civ3 crashes when it gets to the missing civs?
