Most raw materials (ie coal) are transported by train. You'll often find train loops at mines and distribution centers so trains can quickly do a U-Turn and be quickly filled.

Resources and Diplomacy are the big ones for me. I never seem to get a coal square in my empire and it generally ends up with me annihilating the poor sap with the closest coal resource :P Diplomacy is a testament to open-ended programming. Now, if other things get added into the game...

So I've got a few colonies around the jungle, mainly to stop the bloody Aztecs from settling there, and set a few workers round there on automated (The Shift-A one), because I really hate clearing Jungle. So I leave them be for ages, and then come back, and see all the squares they've cleared...
