    Culture Group: Americans aren't American...

It seems to me you are all arguing in circles. Can you define exactly what you mean by culture? I'm an American, and I actually consider myself such. I actually like my country, is that so wrong? Other people like their countries, I do not condemn them for such. Why should Americans be...

The Great Tank vs. Spearman Challenge

I can buy the fact that a randomizer might include such incidents as hitting stored ammunition and such, but the Maine was sitting in a harbor doing absolutely nothing. It wasn't in combat, so the chance of a stray shot hitting explosives was nil. Therefore it has nothing to do with combat...

The Great Tank vs. Spearman Challenge

I'm no history buff, but I remember what actually sunk the Maine. It was an internal problem with some sort of wiring. That has nothing to do with Civ3 combat. Unless we should worry about our units suddenly dieing from accidently blowing themselves up or something. EDIT: IIRC, it was...

The Great Tank vs. Spearman Challenge

To Zachriel: In reference to my post way back, I would hardly call one sentence a tirade, and I was merely pointing out a perception, not actually claiming you are. One solution, only allow infantry to capture cities. Doesn't solve iffy combat but would make more sense.

The Great Tank vs. Spearman Challenge

Yeah, I agree with you. I enjoy the game immensely too (despite all the frustration it gives me). I think the biggest problem is that frustrated people have no place to vent. Whether or not it's a legitimate problem, if anyone even begins to show irritation, then someone complains that...

The Great Tank vs. Spearman Challenge

I've never had the Spearman defeat Modern Armor thing, but I've had Pikemen do it. And I must say, while I'm not saying Civ3 is horrible, I do have issues with the combat as well. I'm not defending Zoauve or Troyens, but you must admit (this goes to Zachriel and Eyrei) that you two defend...

    Tribes, Villages, Towns and Cities

Ummm...I'm not 100% sure on this, but the game Civilization takes place after you've learned the key technologies of Irrigation, Building and what not. So basically that's already occured for your civ when the game starts.

As promised, a Civ III combat test map

I loved SMAC. (Hehe, I'd hate to have that taken out of context) :) I wonder why Firaxis scrapped so many of the nice features of SMAC. I guess they don't want to homogenize their products, but it seems that CivIII could really have benefited from some of the SMAC niceties. I still want...

As promised, a Civ III combat test map

Excellent post Hwinkels. I'm glad that you could answer not only my questions about the RNG, but also add insight and solid evidence to back up your answers. This of course leads to the next question, since the RNG seems not to be at fault, how is the defense number calculated? If it is a...

As promised, a Civ III combat test map

Dan, a simple way to eliminate all of this is if you could do us a favor, simply ask one of the developers how they get their random numbers? Do they use a custom made RNG? Does it perform use a bell curve distribution? What language is this game written in? C++? If so, does it simply call...

    I can't win, literally

I don't think I've ever seen this said anywhere, but I ran into an odd situation, I can't win. I have all the victory conditions turned on, no one has won yet and yet I can't fulfill any victory conditions. I'm the Iroquois and control a large portion of the land. Not enough for Domination...

Combat system - statistical stuff from >20 games

Confusing quote? Whom did I quote? Not sure what you mean on that one. I hate to say it but you missed my point. My point is not for completely predictable results. My point is for results to more closely follow the properly predicted outcomes. Take Fantasy General for instance (great...

Combat system - statistical stuff from >20 games

Ok, I think the point is getting lost here. Let me clarify for everyone: No one has issues with random flukes. Nobody, not a one. So please, no more "But randomness is real" or "I don't want to always win my fights". That's not the issue. Never has been. The issue is that some of us...

Combat system - statistical stuff from >20 games

I think it's a testimony that we have rational adults posting to this thread that no flame war has broken out. :) I guess my point is that occasional flukes are ok, in fact it does make me raise an eyebrow every now and then, but I seem to have more than my fair share of occasional flukes...

Combat system - statistical stuff from >20 games

Ok, I was originally going to post something that might be inflammatory. I've decided against that. So I'll sum up and try to avoid a flame war. "But then, I don't mind the occasional unbelievable result - if I knew ahead of time how everything ended, I wouldn't waste my time playing."...
