Is he playing with someone else on a lan or through the same router? If you are serving your computer may see 2 computers coming from one ip address and not allow him to join if someone else from the same ip address is already on.

Not sure what it is, but next time when your game loads, hold the shift button down. This appearantly clears the cashe and will help resolve the issue.
