I switch it on and off. It makes management so much easier, like I know where my roads exactly are and the mess is all gone. However, I can't click on military units in cities and I have a computer that can run the game on high graphics so I don't play purely on strategic view.

Steam doesn't stop people from pirating a game, but lets say for the sake of argument that it did, and by 60%! Where is the "net positive gain in revenue" coming from?
Unless the AI offer to be my vassal, I'll usually take their beaker and commerce city. When they finally capitulate, I make them tech useless stuff like horseriding (which can a while if I crippled you as planned). You gotta watch your underlings with a sharp eye ya know.
It sounds like you can run across the map with tanks and rifleman. If you're afraid of the economic consequences of maintaining captured cities, then you can go on a raze campaign.
I can't imagine a million people on a field with swords (would be epic), but rifles are more efficient when killing. When you're fighting with swords, you'll usually know if you're going to win or not, in which case you'll surrender or run for your life (leading to less deaths by sword). I'm...
If I'm having a stressful day, I don't think I would be playing Civ4 lol. But if my enemy and I are continents apart, then I will launch a capture-raze campaign.
