Hmm. Dissapointing that barbs don't seem to be able to use ships for anything other than 'wander around and kill things'.
I would also like to note that it might be possible to cross some bodies of water with strategic city placement (since galleys can usually travel anywhere in cultural borders).

I don't see any way that any other building could effect trade routes. Of course, someone could confirm or refute this by doing an experiment with the world builder in which they place various cities and change their sizes or move them or add buildings and record the results. See, high school...
