I bought Civ V when it came out, but I quickly got disgusted with how stupid the AI was. I've read the diplomacy is a bit better now, but is its unit management any better? Before it would just send unit after unit at me with zero tactical ability. I enjoy a somewhat difficult game, but not...
Above all though, the extremely poor AI has been the major problem in my mind. While some of the other mechanics were a bit odd at times, none of them were game-breaking.
The stupid grind in MMOs is a system designed to stretch out a little bit of fun as far as possible to make it so that developers don't have to make as much content and keep getting money rolling in. It's all about screwing the consumer over by manipulating their psychology.

Achievements in games are pretty stupid anyway. They make people think about how to get these stupid points instead of actually having fun. Now the stupid grind of MMOs can be yours to treasure in all genres...ugh.
I haven't tried the new patch, but before I told my worker to build a road from one square to a city and he built to the coast and then embarked. They are really stupid.

There's no appropriate Civ map size for that, even huge is far, far too small.
They should have gone with a strategic battle system for a strategic game. CTP2 had the right idea with combining units into armies that fought together (far, far superior to the later Civ3's version of armies)...
