I usually play continents, large size at standard pace.
I turn science victory off because rushing to build something to win always seemed off to me. This means that it usually turns into a late game battle between a warmonger and a cultural civ with a couple of civs trying to win diplomatically.

When I used one I got a -4 diplomacy modifier with the country I was at war with (America I think). I wasn't that impressed by their effectiveness though.
They can move much quicker in enemy territory, usually units can only move one square per turn in enemy territory whereas Paras can drop five. I find them very useful.
I didn't win this game, Washington got too powerful and it was an utter stalemate.
I did just win my first Noble game however via space race with the Celts. It was a close run thing though as it was 2038 by the time I won and Hammurabi came very close to winning a diplomatic victory.
