I didn't switch from Autocracy. I finished Rationalism, went 3 policies into Autocracy, and opened Patronage.

Go conquer Sao Paulo. Rush Construction, get your Composite Bows, try and get friendly with a military city state. Then go take the city for your own. It will slow you down initially, but it could be something.
