It depends a great deal on the difficulty level as well as the planet customisation options. In my opinion, the Planet Cult is exceptionally strong when you play in a tiny map with plenty of fungus and little ocean. For larger maps, Yang is very powerful, thanks to the change in efficiency in SMACX.

Ok. In that case, I'd reckon they'd try contacting Earth as soon as they have the technology to do so -- just to let them know the mission has been successful up to that point. I know when you beat the game, you're told Earth isn't responding. Perhaps if the Unity tries contacting Earth soon...

One that hasn't already been mentioned is the Cure Cancer wonder. While a better deal than, say, the Great Wall, it pops up far too late in the game for it to be of any real use. It's little more than eye candy for me.
