Comings, Goings and New Arrivals VIII

Hello everybody - long time no see. (Over two years, apparently) I tried to login a few moths ago, but I couldn't correctly remember my password, and had some trouble getting a new one sent to me. But that's over now, thankfully. I'm not going to lie, I mostly came back so I can pepper Plotinus...

    Ask a Theologian IV

Hey Plotinus! Been awhile. I have a couple of questions: 1. At least in the Western Christian tradition, Peter has traditionally been said to have been martyred in Rome. As far as I can tell, this isn't mentioned in the canonical Bible, but is attested to in a couple of early 2nd century...

So, I admit it: I forgot about this. I typed up an almost complete response, and then got busy and forgot it entirely. I’m sorry for gravedigging this thread so seriously, but I did promise that I would respond, and I take that seriously. I don’t especially want this thread to get resurrected...

It's pretty much poor history or theology, or both. If I weren't in the middle of writing a long paper, I'd go into detail now -- but I am, so all I had time for was a simple assessment. If I have time tomorrow I'll get around to it, and if not then, over the weekend. (It's a crazy week.) If I...

Kentucky church votes to ban interracial couples

A nice mixture of boring and well-known truths, inaccuracies, uncharitable interpretations, a laughable ignorance of the distinction between statements of fact and statements of justification, and simple extratextual interpolations. But, other than that, cool graphic.

Yeah, your case has been dismissed due to lack of evidence. When you want to actually talk, let me know. (This might require you actually checking out what we're talking about -- your questions, especially that last one, show you really haven't done your homework, and aren't even reading the...

If you're not going to actually listen to what I'm saying, then I'm not going to bother saying it.

Read verses 1-9 of the same chapter. You asked me to talk about a specific point, and I did. But now you're bringing up a separate point, which is addressed in a slightly different place. What Paul has to say is pretty consistent with what the Gospels have Christ saying.

Perfectly fine, and perhaps preferable. Why?

It doesn't address them, since an essential element of marriage (sex) is condemned. And if by "sexless" marriages you mean one where marriage never happens, it's generally not positive: There's arguably room for a sexless marriage where neither is interested in sex, as then there would be no...

Is that really the tack you're taking? Heterosexual sex is described as moral in some circumstances, immoral in others. Homosexual sex is described as immoral, period. There's no contextual reason for believing that Biblical references refer exclusively to extramarital homosexual sex.

I'm not even sure what you're saying here. I can't tell if you're being unclear, illogical, or both.

Kentucky church votes to ban interracial couples

How is race generally related to childbirth in any way? But it expressly forbids homosexual sex, which is generally thought to be integral to marriage. Troll all you want, but the simple fact is that gay marriage and a serious, sincerely devout interpretation of Christian scriptures are...

How do you feel about situations where wife earns way more than husband?

Actually, that's a very strong version of affirmative action your'e describing, and it's been unconstitutional since University of California v. Bakke (1978). Even the mechanistic addition of "points" to an application process was ruled unconstitutional in 2003, since that doesn't help with...

US unemployment rate falls to 8.6%

Can one of you guys explain exactly how the process of discounting seasonal hires works? I have a general idea, but it'd be nice to see a simplified walkthrough of the calculations, if possible.
