I've been running Beyond the Sword for a very long time, but when I went to start it up today, I consistently get a message which flashes for about a second, followed by a system beep. The message:
ERROR: an extended Memory Manger is already installed. XMS Driver not installed. Program too...
I wonder, among those who play "well", how much they define in their favor ahead of time. As I mentioned earlier, I tend to run everything random except:
- I play Noble
- World size (at least large)
- Players (at least 8)
- I don't allow technology brokering
- You can sail over the poles...
I do "OK" at BTS, but seldom win. The OCC idea sounds like a good idea, as I don't typically micromanage my cities.
Don't beat yourself up too badly. One thing I've come to realize is that it's not necessarily "bad play" that's doing me in. If you're like me and have things start up...
I've been trying to figure out the best starting strategy as a BTS Noble.
The trick seems to be to keep a decent balance between research and production, by tweaking cities to favor commerce vs. hammers.
With four cities under my belt, I've normally got to start kicking down the research...
Ah! Thanks Roland. You're correct (of course) but I can't remember ever playing a game wherein it's progressed in ½-year increments, but then I've just started BTS. Is this unique to BTS, or some other factor?

That may at least point you in the right direction.
RE: My game which has scheduled itself to end in 2080...
The zipped savegame file of my current game is 685K, which exceeds the site's limit. Is there somewhere I can email it?
Has anyone run into a (BTS) time game that ends beyond 2050? My current game is set to end at 2080! I started as 'Ancient' as always but, for whatever reason, this game is getting an additional 30 years.
What technique do YOU use to increase your power stat? Most of the AI's always out-power me. Recently, I had a game where I was somewhat limited in land area, so I thought I'd try an experiment and started cranking out militia . All I managed to do was eat up my finances and still not beat...
This thread intrigued me as I've been playing Noble for quite some time... OK, trying to play noble. Unless I start with some ideal location, I always get my butt kicked.
The bad thing about this game is that it's not obvious where you've gone wrong, so you keep repeating the same mistakes. I...
