can some help me please what do i first. do i build alot of city ? do i build city improvment ? and so on

i was really good at civ2 and love the game alot. but on civ3 i am crap. i have no money no science and all the computer kicks my ass and i can never get to build wonders because i as too slow. PLEASE HELP what am i doing wrong.

my game is getting slower and slower. the pause between each turn is taking long and getting boring. is there a bug and is there anything i can do
