    Have to agree. The AI is trying to "win". If you are going for a peaceful cultural or science victory and are lacking military, the AI will see its best shot at "winning" is to destroy your chances of winning. Historically the small, successful guys with no military don't last too long.

    Try the ring map. It connects you to two other land masses via small bridges that can be easily held by just a few units if things get out of hand. This allows you to both have your own little island and meet and greet others.
