Haha.. I've only seen that before when playing a hotseat game with someone pretty inexperienced at Civ. He was lowest in score (even below Tokugawa, Sury's vassal) and had Gilgamesh and Zara approach him to offer Drama and Music. :p I guess it only happens when the AI is way ahead of you.

I'm too stubborn to learn all these diplomacy strategies, so I never give in to any demands. I got this bonus near the very end of a game in which I had been a tech buddy with Mansa the whole game. It never got above +1. Only time I've seen it.

Worker!! :p But I really do agree with the longbowman idea. Especially after a couple early wars, it's great to just stick a few of those guys in each city and know that you're pretty much safe until people get knights and gunpowder units, allowing you to build up infrastructure.

This is exactly the reason I've been following this one so closely. I prefer large maps with lots of opponents, so I've never achieved one of the military victories; most of mine end in culture or space (Digression: about Huayna, the culture part was slow but the diplomacy got very interesting)...

You only see in the trade window what they can trade you. Maybe you haven't discovered Replaceable Parts yet, so you have to learn that before he could teach you about rifling. To your second question, I think the AI gets a big (50%?) discount for upgrading troops on every level.
